Known as Black Widow, La Madrina and the Cocaine Godmother, Blanco was one of the most powerful cocaine traffickers in the 80s.
Actress Sofia Vergara is set to play Colombian drug lord Griselda Blanco in an upcoming limited series for Netflix. Vergara, perhaps best known for her role as Gloria on the five-time Emmy Award-winning ABC comedy Modern Family, wrapped up the series recently along with her second season as a judge on NBC’s America’s Got Talent, reports The Hollywood Reporter. Now she will play one of the most powerful cocaine traffickers in the 1980s and a key figure in Miami’s drug wars. The six-episode series titled Griselda follows the story of the real life of Griselda Blanco, who created one of the most profitable cartels in history. Due to her charm and unsuspecting ruthlessness she came to be widely known as Black Widow, La Madrina and the Cocaine Godmother.

Eric Newman, Doug Miro, Andrés Baiz, and Carlo Bernard, the creative team behind Narcos, will be part of the upcoming show. Newman served as showrunner for five seasons of the popular drug cartel drama Narcos and Narcos: Mexico. Despite the connection to Narcos, Netflix affirmed that Griselda will not be a spin-off. Sophia Vergara will also serve as executive producer of the project with Luis Balaguer. The pair had been developing the project for eight years at their Latin World Entertainment banner before bringing it to Netflix.
