'Sicario' 3: Everything We Know So Far

This is a live-update article and it will be updated as new details about Sicario 3 come our way. This is what we know so far.

SICARIO: DAY OF THE SOLDADO

Despite controversy and a call for a boycott from Ciudad Juárez, the action thriller 'Sicario' managed to grab a notable success when it was released in 2015. A sequel was delivered three years later, and its open-ending led us to believe that a third film is being planned. So what's the status of 'Sicario' 3? Is it happening? Here is what we know.

Will There Be 'Sicario' 3 aka Sicario: Capos

Back in 2018, 'Sicario: Day of the Soldado' producer Trent Luckinbill confirmed to Screenrant that a third Sicario film is already in the works. Fortunately, Black Label Media, which will be producing Sicario: Capos, has shared that the movie will go into production in 2022. But we are in 2024 and we haven't gotten much details about the third instalment. However, in a recent September 2023 interview with The Messenger, producers Erica Lee and Basil Iwanyk stated that the film is in production. “Oh yeah,” Iwanyk said when asked if it was happening. Lee, in reference to the now-ended Writers' Strike, added: “When we can continue writing it. It was pencils down, but the idea is awesome.”

It seems as though the producers are quite confident about the production of Sicario 3.

When Will 'Sicario' 3 Release?

As of this writing, there is no release date for the third installment of Sicario. However, since the Industry Strikes are now over we can expect the film to decide on a release date sometime soon. There could be a possibility to see the film in 2025.

Josh Brolin However Believes A Third Film Is Unlikely

During an interview with Variety, Josh Brolin expressed concern about the fate of the third season, saying that it was unlikely to get made. He said:

"These people that I got to work with aren't necessarily doing a lot of films now. All these people that you're talking about, Paul Thomas Anderson, it's tough for him to do a film. Paul's become a really close friend, and I loved working with him on 'Inherent Vice.'

The actor added, "I can't wait to see what he does next. But I think he knows that these types of movies are not necessarily getting made so much anymore, $20 to 45 million dollar movies. Would 'No Country [for Old Men] get made today? Would 'True Grit' get made today? Would 'Sicario' get made today? 'Sicario 3,' we've been trying to get that right and get that going, but why hasn't it happened? How long can you wait? A tough movie to get made even though the two made money, and people are asking about it all the time."

What Is The Plot Of 'Sicario,' and What Will Happen In 'Sicario' 3?

'Sicario' (Spanish for "Hitman) follows a principled FBI agent commissioned by a government task force to bring down the head of a ruthless and brutal Mexican drug cartel. The sequel, Sicario: Day of the Soldado' shifted focus from drugs to human trafficking, with Blunt out of the picture. The sequel's ending sees Alejandro survive a gunshot to the face from a neophyte gang member, Miguel, who was forced to shoot him. The final scene takes a time jump a year after the shooting incident, with the recovered Alejandro seemingly recruiting Miguel. The ending is setting up a potential apprentice relationship for the two for the next movie. Hence, it's likely that Sicario: Capos will pick up from where it left in the second installment. Moreover, Capos' literal translation in English is "bosses," which also indicates that Matt and Alejandro will face the toughest drug kingpins of their lifetime.

'Sicario' 3 Cast: Who Are Returning?

Benicio del Toro as former Mexican prosecutor turned assassin Alejandro Gillick, and Jeffrey Donovan, as Steve Forsing are expected to return for the third film. However, as of now, there is no confirmed news of what cast will appear in the upcoming film. Additionally, it would also be nice to explore the evolution of Emily Blunt's character (Kate) after the traumatic events of the original film.

During the same interview with The Messenger Iwanyk said, “I could watch Benicio play that guy forever. I mean, I can watch Benicio in anything, but with that character, it doesn’t get old.”
