A producer may have assured us that 'Sicario' 3 is happening back in 2018, but are plans still the same?
This article was recently reviewed and is up to date as of March 8, 2021.
Despite controversy and a call for a boycott from Ciudad Juárez, the action thriller 'Sicario' managed to grab a notable success when it released in 2015.
A sequel was delivered 3 years later, and its open-ending lead us to believe that a third film is being planned.
So what's the status of 'Sicario' 3? Is it happening? Here is what we know.
Back in 2018, 'Sicario: Day of the Soldado' producer Trent Luckinbill confirmed to Screenrant that a third Sicario film is already in the works. However, more than 2 years have passed, and we no longer have updates on Sicario 3. It could be possible that the interest in the film series has already died out, especially with its expensive production cost.
The abandonment is unfortunate, considering 'Sicario' is highly-praised for its screenplay, direction, musical score, and cinematography, not to mention Blunt and del Toro's performances. Blunt's absence in the sequel was greatly felt by fans, and in 2018, there were reports that producers were considering bringing her back for 'Sicario'3.
Perhaps, if Emily Blunt signs up again, then a third film will likely happen.
As of this writing, there are no more news and announcements for a third 'Sicario' film. Therefore, there's no release date available, but who knows what the future holds? If a third outing for the film series will get picked up in the future, then we'll make sure to bring the news to you. For now, all we could do is wish for that day to come.
'Sicario' (Spanish for "Hitman) follows a principled FBI agent commissioned by a government task force to bring down the head of a ruthless and brutal Mexican drug cartel. The sequel, Sicario: Day of the Soldado' shifted focus from drugs to human trafficking, with Blunt already out of the picture.
If a third film is going to happen, it will likely pick up on the ending of Sicario 2.
The sequel's ending sees Alejandro survive a gunshot to the face from a neophyte gang member, Miguel, who was forced to shoot him. The final scene takes a time jump a year after the shooting incident, with the recovered Alejandro seemingly recruiting Miguel.
The ending is setting up a potential apprentice relationship for the two for the next movie. We are expecting Miguel to work closely with Alejandro if Sicario 3 will ever happen and hopefully cross paths with Blunt's character again.
As mentioned, there are no recent news and announcements for 'Sicario' 3 in the past years, including casting details.
However, if a third film will happen in the future, then we will likely see Josh Brolin return as CIA officer Matt Gravert.
He will possibly be joined by Benicio del Toro as former Mexican prosecutor turned assassin, Alejandro Gillick, and Jeffrey Donovan as Steve Forsing.
It would also be nice to explore the evolution of Emily Blunt's character (Kate) after the traumatic events of the original film.
The fate of 'Sicario' 3 remains in the dark as of this writing. While waiting for further updates, here is Sicario 2's official trailer for you. We will immediately edit this page once we get more information.
