Marvel's first film with an Asian lead looks lit! Find out all the details about 'Shang-Chi & The Legend Of The Ten Rings' here.
There is a new hero that will be introduced in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He is Shang-Chi (aka the Master of Kung Fu), and you will soon know his story in the upcoming Marvel film 'Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings'.
Shang-Chi first appeared in Marvel Comics in 1973 before becoming allies with Avengers, Marvel Knights, and Heroes for Hire.
The film is directed by 'The Glass Castle' director Destin Daniel Cretton. 'Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings' is making history as the first Marvel film with an Asian lead.
After experiencing multiple pushbacks, Shang-Chi is finally slated to come out. Here is everything we know about 'Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings.'
Release Date: 3 September 2021
'Shang-Chi & The Legend Of The Ten Rings' is the second of four installments that make up Phase 4's 2021 slate.
Just like most films in the MCU, 'Shang-Chi & The Legend Of The Ten Rings' has suffered numerous setbacks brought by the Coronavirus pandemic.
The film was planned to release by 12 February 2021, in time for the first day of the Chinese New Year. Production for 'Shang-Chi' was supposed to begin in February 2020, with principal photography to take place in Australia and New South Wales. The production was halted due to lockdowns, and the cast and crew were not able to get together until early August. The release date was pushed to May 2021 and was pushed again to July 2021, before finally falling to September 3, 2021.
Shang-Chi, a martial artist raised and trained by the Ten Rings organization since he was a child. His father, Wenwu, is the current leader of Ten Rings, a terrorist organization with the sole objective of destroying world peace.
After living a normal life for 10 years, Shang-Chi is called back by his father to return and serve the organization once again.
Although Shang-Chi refuses to return, a series of events will unfold that will force him to confront his past, ultimately unveiling his true powers to friends like Katy in the process.
The film is still inspired by the legendary comic book character, with an added modern-day perspective to steer away from negative stereotypes.
"When you look at the character of Shang-Chi through the comic books going back to the '70s and '80s, the fact that he existed and the fact that he was an Asian character was amazing," Simu Liu Liu said via EW.
"But at the same time, there are aspects of that portrayal of him that maybe could feel a little stereotypical. So when we first started to map out who this character was and what his journey was going to be over the course of this film, we were all very sensitive to not have it go into stereotypical territory."
Albeit, it's funny because people are already joking about Wenwu's expectations and disappointment of Shang-Chi as a very 'Asian' representation of being a parent.
Shang-Chi is considered as one of the strongest non-superhumans presented in the Marvel comics. It's nice to finally see the extent of his strength on screen.
Simu Liu takes the titular role of Shang-Chi, the martial artist and son of Ten Rings leader Wenwu. In the comics, his father was once known as Fu Manchu. However, Marvel lost the rights to the character. So Shang-Chi's father is featured as Wenwu, also known as "The Mandarin," played by Tony Leung. Awkwafina stars as Katy, Shan-Chi's close friend who will be his ally in the dangerous moments ahead.
To complete the cast list, we have Fala Chen, Florian Munteanu, Ronny Chieng, Michelle Yeoh, and Meng'er Zhang.
