The Russo brothers have hinted during an interview that one of the current Marvel characters is secretly gay!
Now that Avengers: Endgame has come and gone and has also grossed out the Titanic in just over a week, it seems there has been one minor detail that flew by most audience members during the film’s duration. The Russo-brother-director duo may have hinted that one of the current MCU characters is secretly gay.
It seems Marvel isn’t too shy or reserved when it comes to inclusivity, especially characters that represent the LGBT community. But even in spite of being quite open about it, more specifically in the recently released blockbuster, Avengers: Endgame, Marvel has largely received a ton of criticism for lack of LGBT representation in their films.
Still, a representation wouldn’t really be such a bad thing now would it? That being said, Avengers: Endgame isn’t just breaking box-office records, but also barriers of LGBT inclusivity for being the first Disney-Marvel movie to include an openly gay character, who just so happened to be played by one half of the Russo-director duo, Joe.
This aforementioned character is just some extra who is part of the support group where Captain America was at and talked about going on his first date since losing his partner, possibly referring to the Thanos snap at the end of Avengers: Infinity War. It doesn’t really make or break the movie for what it is but it’s still a ground-breaking moment if you’re the kind that cares for that kind of thing, not that I’m forcing on those who don’t or being hateful.
It may have been just for a moment but to the Russo brothers, it was important to them before finally exiting Marvel after contributing seven years of incredible movies like the two Captain America movies and two Avengers movies.
When speaking on the film’s scene featuring the Disney-Marvel universe’s first gay character to Entertainment Weekly hosts Dalton Ross and Jessica Shaw, Joe replied, “Yes, openly gay. There’ve been insinuations about other characters’ sexuality, but this is the first openly gay character.”
And when Shaw asked, “Who else is gay?” Joe replied, “Uhhh… We’re gonna find out!”
Anthony responded, “That’s a story for another day.”
During a press tour with Deadline, Joe says:
“Representation is really important. It was important to us as we did four of these films, we wanted a gay character somewhere in them. We felt it was important that one of us play him, to ensure the integrity and show it is so important to the filmmakers that one of us is representing that. It is a perfect time because one of the things that is compelling about the Marvel Universe moving forward is its focus on diversity.”
Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige spoke with Gregory Ellwood, of The Playlist, last summer regarding the introduction of more LGBT+ characters. He said that two openly gay characters would be revealed, adding ‘both ones you’ve seen and ones you haven’t seen’.
We have seen one openly gay character in Endgame but they are still two more if we are going with what Feige said. The one that we haven't seen could possibly have been Joe Russo's character in Endgame and the other two, well, have yet to be revealed, but they are among the current Avengers.
There are rumors that have been circulating around for a possible openly gay superhero, most possibly with The Eternals. We’ve already seen minor inclusions with Valkyrie, who is bisexual in the comics but hasn’t been portrayed as such in her live-action self and Negasonic Teenage Warhead, from Deadpool and Deadpool 2, the latter which included her girlfriend.
