When Moana released in 2016, it was instantly loved by the audience. And now, there have been a few reports that there is a chance that a sequel may be happening pretty soon.
Back in 2016, when Moana first released, it was widely loved by the critics and the audience alike. It is a beautiful Disney 3-D animation movie that tells the story of a young but curious girl who goes on a journey in order to find out what her true purpose is. She is on a mission to find the whereabouts of the legendary demi-God called Maui. Apart from that, she is also on her journey to return the mystical relic to the Goddess Te Fiti, and she also has to save people of her entire village.
It has been three years since we saw her incredible journey. The movie was also a huge success commercially, as it earned more than $643 million worldwide. Hence, it only makes sense that the Mouse House will go to make a sequel to this movie. The movie was voiced by Auliʻi Cravalho as Moana, Dwayne The Rock Johnson as Maui, Temuera Morrison as Moana's father Taui, Nicole Scherzinger as Moana's mother Sina, Rachel House as Moana's Grandmother, Jemaine Clement voiced the giant coconut crab and Alan Tudyk voiced Moana's rooster.
According to We Got This Covered, a Moana sequel is in the works already as they have reported saying that the sequel to the movie has been greenlit by the Mouse House. Not only this, along with our very favorite Dwayne The Rock Johnson, Auliʻi Cravalho will also be making a comeback. The original 2016 movie had outstanding animation, extremely catchy tunes, and a beautiful story that had its roots in the Polynesian and Tongan cultures that managed to touch the hearts of millions of people.
Disney has neither confirmed nor denied its plan for the sequel, but rumors suggest that Lin-Manuel Miranda, the songwriter of the original movie has started to work on a follow-up movie earlier this year. Another report by Page Six suggested that Miranda has already met with Disney and is having talks about the script of the sequel movie.
Going by all these reports, it only seems like a matter of time that Disney makes the official announcement. The 2016 movie left ample opportunities for a sequel. At the end of the movie, the audience saw Moana heading back home as a Wayfinder, who practices the ancient Polynesian technique of navigating the open oceans by observing the water, the sky, and the stars. There is a chance that Moana 2 could take a lot of different paths and fans have already started exploring and speculating different routes.
Since the movie has been a major success for Disney, fans might be wondering why it is taking so long for the executives to come up with a sequel. But, it has been noted time and again that Disney takes its own sweet time in order to announce the sequels of the movies. Fans had to wait for a very long time in order to get 'Frozen 2' and there has also been a considerable amount of time spent between Toy Story sequels.
Lastly, we all are excited about the prospect of a Moana sequel but we also need to keep in mind that nothing has been officially announced as Disney has not spoken about this matter. Even though it is quite likely that a sequel is going to happen, it is best to wait until we hear official confirmation. Till then, keep an eye out for this space as we will update it as soon as anything official drops.
