A spin-off series featuring the life of a young Queen Charlotte is in the works.
All hail the queen! After serving us with some overawing regalness in 'Bridgerton' season 1, we are delighted to learn that Queen Charlotte is getting her own limited series.
Netflix announced the great news on May 14. The upcoming spin-off series will be a prequel to the original Bridgerton show and delve into the young Queen's origin.
The prequel will also feature the stories of the young Lady Danbury and Violet Bridgerton.
For those who might have missed this info, Queen Charlotte is a real person. She was a monarch of the Regency Era from 1761 to 1818.
She was not part of Julia Quinn's book series, but the author welcomed her addition to the 'Bridgerton' Universe through the Netflix adaptation.
"I go back and forth between wishing I had actually written her in the books and then being glad I didn't, because I don't know if I could have done as good a job," Quinn says about Queen Charlotte's inclusion.
Let's find out everything we need to know about the upcoming series.
All Hail The Queen!— Netflix (@netflix) May 14, 2021
Thrilled to announce we’re expanding the Bridgerton universe with a limited series that will tell Queen Charlotte’s origin story — the series will also feature young Violet Bridgerton and young Lady Danbury pic.twitter.com/nshBfETMdN
The series is still in early development and will not be ready at least a few years from now.
'Bridgerton' season 2 is currently in production, and Netflix has renewed the series for seasons 3 and 4 in April.
“By planning and prepping all the upcoming seasons now, we also hope to keep up a pace that will keep even the most insatiable viewers totally fulfilled,” Bajaria said in a statement.
For now, the earliest possible release date for Queen Charlotte's release is late 2022.
There are no official casting details for now, but we are expecting to get more updates as the limited series goes into production.
Aside from Queen Charlotte, the prequel will also feature the stories of the young Violet Bridgerton, the matriarch of the titular family. This means that we might also see the late Edmund Bridgerton and find out how their relationship blossomed.
A young Lady Danbury will also be part of the series. Hopefully, it will explore Lady Danburry's connection to Simon's family.
The Queen's origin story is not part of Quinn’s literary canon, so the creators will have to come up with new material for the show.
As per Netflix's statement, the prequel will focus on the rise of Queen Charlotte to the throne, as well as her romantic life. Queen Charlotte was first introduced in the 'Bridgerton' series as the fastidious queen who intimidated the debutantes. She was also portrayed as the protective wife of King George III, known as "Mad King George," who seems to be suffering from dementia.
The spinoff will likely explore the couple's love story and include historical details from Queen Charlotte's actual life.
"Many viewers had never known the story of Queen Charlotte before Bridgerton brought her to the world," said Bajaria in the announcement. "I’m thrilled this new series will further expand her story and the world of Bridgerton," Bajaria said about young Charlotte's series.
We will keep you updated on future developments on the series. So make sure to stay around.
