Puss sets on an epic venture, to try and find the mythical last wish!
We saw the feline assassin go on a solo affair back in 2011, fans have longed to get a glimpse of the beloved character since then. More than a decade later the animated cat will be back in the theaters with the sequel Puss in Boots: The Last Wish. Here is everything we know about the next DreamWorks Animation Studios production, let's take a look at the cast, trailer, poster, and more, shall we?
The movie is set to make its big screen debut on December 21, just in time for Christmas. An announcement was made by Deadline, that the sequel of 2011's Puss in Boots would arrive this December, taking the place of the upcoming Super Mario Bros. movie, which has now been pushed back to April 2023. Universal Pictures is distributing both of these movies.
According to DreamWorks Animation's official synopsis, the movie will center around the feline as he comes to the realization that he has wasted his eight lives and comes up with an amazing plan of getting a refresh. We will see him embark on this new journey to the Black Forest to find the legendary Wishing Star and get back what he has lost. The Shrek cinematic franchise is known for being very family-friendly but this time around when the movie's first 27 minutes were screened during the 2022 Annecy International Animation Festival, director Joel Crawford said, "There are darker tones in this. Puss is down to the last of his nine lives. He’s grappling with his mortality, his fear of death is the engine that drives the movie, and the Grimm fairy tales were a big inspiration" The film is also a homage to Classic Spaghetti Westerns, the director said in an interview, "Everything about [Puss in Boots], his ego, everything is big. And it’s a big show and it’s iconic. But then underneath [is] a lot of the Sergio Leone stuff, and I love Akira Kurosawa. And underneath those, they’re larger-than-life characters but there’s a humanity that’s underneath them, especially in Kurosawa’s work. And we wanted to tap into that."
Antonio Banderas will be providing the voice of the titular feline and Salma Hayek will be giving the voice of the fearless and nimble Kitty Softpaws, so yes both OGs are back! In March, Deadline confirmed that the cast also included Olivia Colman, who will be taking on the role of Mama Bear. Other cast members include Florence Pugh, Ray Winstone, John Mulaney, Anthony Mendez, Wagner Moura, Da'vine Joy Randolph, and Samson Kayo.
