A much darker reboot of 'Pretty Little Liars' is coming to HBO Max from the maker of 'Riverdale' and 'Chilling Adventures of Sabrina'.
Got a secret, we can't keep it, swear this one is real! An upcoming 'Pretty Little Liars' reboot is in the works, and it's going to be "darker" than its predecessor.
The reboot is officially titled 'Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin' and will arrive on HBO Max. It will introduce an entirely new cast and creative team.
'Riverdale' and 'Chilling Adventures of Sabrina' creator and showrunner Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa and 'CAOS' writer Lindsay Calhoon Bring will write the show, while Lisa Soper will be directing the first two episodes.
Here is everything we know about the 'Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin,' including plot, cast, release date predictions, and more.
'Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin' will take place in the town of Millwood. The town hides dark secrets that have something to do with the tragic events that almost ripped the town apart 20 years ago. The reboot series will introduce a new group of teenage girls who will become the new Liars. They will be targeted by unknown perpetrator/s who want them to pay for the sins committed by their parents two decades ago.
“We’re such huge fans of what [original creator] I. Marlene King and her iconic cast created, we knew that we had to treat the original series as #CANON and do something different,” Aguirre-Sacasa and Calhoon said in a joint statement regarding the new show. “So, we’re leaning into the suspense and horror in this reboot, which hopefully will honor what the fans loved about the hit series while weaving in new, unexpected elements.”
According to Deadline, 'Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin' will be "a darker, present-day iteration of the popular 2010-17 series."
There is no confirmation yet if the show will be connected to the original series.
'Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin' is the third spin-off show from the original 'Pretty Little Liars' series, which is based on the book series written by Sara Shepard. The spin-off 'Ravenswood' following Caleb as he moved to a ghost-filled town aired in 2013 and ended after only one season.
The second spin-off show, called 'Pretty Little Liars: The Perfectionists', followed Alison and Mona at Beacon Heights University, aired in 2019, but was also canceled after just one season.
The casting for the upcoming reboot seems to be ongoing. As of this writing, there are only two confirmed cast members: Chandler Kinney and Maia Reficco.
Chandler Kinney is cast in the role of Tabby, a horror movie buff and aspiring director who is hiding a dark secret. Kinney has starred in 'Lethal Weapon' TV show, 'American Horror Story,' and 'KC Undercover.'
Maia Reficco is cast as Noa, a track star trying to get her life back to normal after going into juvenile detention in the summer. Reficco's acting credits include the Nickelodeon telenovela 'Kally's Mashup.' She also stars in Netflix's 'Strangers.'
The show is still in very early development, and there is no release date yet as of this writing. However, 'Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin' is scheduled to start filming this summer. Hence, the show will likely premiere sometime in 2022 on HBO Max. Since the show does not require extensive visual effects, the post-production will likely take a short time only. Therefore, a one-year schedule sounds feasible. We will update this space once more information is available.
'Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin' is yet to enter production. Hence, the official trailer might not be available until next year. However, we already have a short teaser, which you can see below.
