The perception of age has changed over time and it is especially apparent in the comparison of these two popular TV shows.

Times have changed and so has the way we perceive women who are in the later stage of their middle age. This was especially apparent when people came to the realization that The Golden Girls were at the same age as the cast of And Just Like That…, the Sex and The City reboot, are now. Both groups of women were in their 50s in the show.

People started noticing this after Betty White's passing on December 31, 2021, which led to a spike in viewership of The Golden Girls. A TikTok user, Brownstonedmama, brought this to everyone's attention. While all the characters are similarly aged in their respective shows, the user pointed out that the Golden Girls look a lot older due to their outdated hairstyles and wardrobe. The user then posed the question, "Is this elderly or just middle-aged?"

One Twitter user, Louis Peitzman, wrote: "Watching a Season 1 episode of The Golden Girls, and Rose's age was just revealed to be 55. This unsettles me." Peitzman continued, "This is Charlotte's age on And Just Like That... We have reached the convergence," and added, "Obviously our perception of what it means to be in one's 50s, 60s, etc. has changed quite a bit over the last 35 years, but here, a lot of it does come down to styling and hair dye (which is a plot point on AJLT). The Golden Girls were also vibrant working women who f*****!

TODAY cohosts, Hoda Kotb and Jenna Bush Hager, also noted this. "Is that so crazy?" Kotb said. "Now when you think of 54 and 55, or people in their 50s, you don’t think about The Golden Girls. You don’t think about a bunch of ladies in a community." Hager added, "The way that they dressed them in cardigans — I mean, I know I’m wearing a cardigan, but I like to dress like a granny," she noted, admitting that she would wear a dress that White's Rose Nylund, was wearing in the clip from The Golden Girls the two women were watching. "They made them older than they actually were."

And Just Like That…premiered on December 9 with three of the four original cast members, Sarah Jessica Parker as Carrie Bradshaw, Cynthia Nixon as Miranda Hobbes, Kristin Davis as Charlotte York Goldenblatt, returning. The first season of the reboot is still in progress and is expected to conclude on February 3. It has received mixed reactions and fans of the original series were disappointed to not see Kim Cattrall as Samantha not returning.

As for The Golden Girls, the show first premiered on September 14, 1985, and went on to May 9, 1992, for seven seasons. It starred White as Rose Nylund, Beatrice Arthur as Dorothy Zbornak, Rue McClanahan as Blanche Devereaux, and Estelle Getty as Sophia Petrillo. Much like the SATC reboot, there was also a Golden Girls spin-off series, The Golden Palace, starring all the main cast with the exception of Bea Arthur.
