The “world’s biggest douchebag" takes the spotlight in the upcoming spin-off series of 'The Suicide Squad'.
If you stick around until the post-credit scenes of 'The Suicide Squad,' you would know that Peacemaker is alive.
The “world’s biggest douchebag" will be starring in his very own show, which will uncover his origin story.
'Peacemaker' will serve as a spin-off series for 'The Suicide Squad,' with director James Gunn returning.
Here's everything you need to know about 'Peacemaker', including plot, cast, release date, and more.
'Peacemaker' is coming to HBO Max in January 2022. The exact premiere date is yet to get announced, but HBO Max will likely give us the exact date in the upcoming weeks or months, now that 'The Suicide Squad' has finally been released.
The show wrapped filming on July 11, 2021, after 131 days of production.
The spin-off series will have eight episodes in total. All episodes are written by James Gunn, who also serves as showrunner of the series.
He will also be directing most episodes, except 4, 5, and 7. Episode 7 will be directed by 'Fractured' director Brad Anderson, while Jody Hill (Eastbound and Down) and Rosemary Rodriguez (Silver Skies) helmed one episode each.
During the post-credit-scenes of 'The Suicide Squad', it's revealed that Peacemaker is still alive! He was found in the rubble, and surprisingly, he survived after getting shot by Bloodsport (Idris Elba) in the neck. The upcoming spin-off series will reveal the origin story of Peacemaker, and how he came to be the character we know.
“Peacemaker has a clear set of ideals that I find really interesting,” Gunn told Empire. “You know: ‘I want peace no matter how many men, women, and children I need to kill to get it.’ Sounds like nonsense, but it also makes a lot of sense. And you see in John’s performance how he does not feel good about it – something I thought was the seed of an entire eight-episode show.”
On September 13, 2021, we had our first look at the series through Entertainment Weekly. The photo shows Peacemaker's teaming up with Economos (Steve Agee), Harcourt (Jennifer Holland), Murn (Chukwudi Iwuji), Adebayo (Danielle Brooks), Vigilante (Freddie Stroma).
According to James Gunn, the story centers around "black ops combating something catastrophic that's facing the planet."
In the original Charlton comics, Christopher Smith was first introduced as a pacifist diplomat and secret vigilante. He later discovers that the root of his violent, pacifist behavior is a mental illness that resulted from the shame of having a Nazi father.
We still do not know how much of his original story will get carried out in the series. However, Gunn promises that it will be a big storyline that will also pay attention to the six other main characters.
"Every character has their own story,” Gunn explained via Collider. “So there's the six main characters of Peacemaker, Leota Adebayo, who's Danielle Brooks, Emilia Harcourt, who's Jennifer Holland, Vigilante, who's Freddie Stroma, Clemson Murn, who is Chukwudi Iwuji, and John Economos, who is Steve Agee. It's really an ensemble about those six characters."
The cast list is led by John Cena, who will be playing the titular role.
Some of the key characters from 'The Suicide Squad' will also be reprising their roles for 'Peacemaker'.
Steve Agee will be returning as John Economos, the warden of the Belle Reve Penitentiary. Jennifer Holland will come back as Emilia Harcourt, the NSA agent. Agee and Harcourt both worked with Waller (Viola Davis) in 'The Suicide Squad.'
'Orange Is the New Black' star Danielle Brooks will play Leota Adebayo. Freddie Stroma will also be starring as Adrian Chase AKA Vigilante. He is a district attorney and crimefighter with the ability to heal from his injuries quickly. We've seen a very different take on the character in The CW's 'Arrow'. Hence, there might also be some changes in the character in the 'Peacemaker'.
Robert Patrick stars as Auggie Smith, the father of Peacemaker. If the series follows the comics, we will get to see his influence in messing up 'Peacemaker.'
Chukwudi Iwuji will be playing Clemson Murn, a character created specifically for the show.
As for the rest of the supporting cast, Lochlyn Munro and Annie Chang will appear as recurring characters Larry Fitzgibbon and Detective Sophie Song.
Christopher Heyerdahl will star as Captain Locke, Elizabeth Ludlow as Keeya, Rizwan Manji as Jamil, and Alison Araya and Lenny Jacobson as married couple Amber and Evan. Nhut Le will also appear in a recurring role as Judomaster.
There is no official trailer as of this writing, yet. But we will keep a close eye on upcoming updates. Feel free to check back to this link from time to time.
