This is a live-update article and it will be updated as new details about Overlord Season 5 come our way. This is what we know so far.
Studio Madhouse brought the first season of Overlord back in February 2017, and it has garnered a loyal fanbase ever since then. Overlord is based on a Japanese light novel by the same name written by Kugane Maruyama and illustrated by So-Bin. Satoshi Oshio and Hugin Miyama are also responsible for bringing forth a manga adaptation of the light novel series in 2014. With the conclusion of the fourth season in September 2022, anime lovers are patiently waiting to hear something about the release of the next season, but Madhouse is here with a pleasant surprise instead. Let’s read ahead to find out everything regarding a potential Overlord Season 5.
As of now, there is no official announcement regarding the release of the fifth season. But according to the production studio's post on Twitter, we are getting a sequel movie instead, which will cover the Holy Kingdom Arc and this effectively explains the delay experienced by season 5. The movie is expected to hit theaters and streaming platforms at some point in 2024. However, based on the positive reception of the audience and a decent rating on My Anime List, the production studio just might get to work on a fifth season. Rest assured, there is plenty of source material that can be animated in the future. So all we can do is patiently look forward to the next season of Overlord.

The story is set in 2126 and follows the final hours of a virtual reality game called Yggdrasil. The game is about to be shut down after a successful run of 12 years. Ainz Ooal Gown, a guild within the world of this game, used to have 41 members, and now it only consists of 4, out of which only an Overlord character called Momonga remains to act as the guild leader. Momonga decided to stay logged in until the game servers shut down forever, but to his surprise, the game didn’t disappear out of existence even past its shutdown time. Momonga stays trapped in his game avatar and finds other NPCs coming to life. In case we get to see season 5, we can expect the animation to pick up from volume 15 of this story which will mostly consist of Ainz’s internal monologue and much less action compared to previous volumes.
The returning cast list of voice actors consists of Satoshi Hino as Ainz Ooal Gown, Yumi Hara as Albedo, Sumire Uesaka as Shalltear Bloodfallen, and Masayuki Katô as Demiurge. The previous seasons were directed mostly by Naoyuki Itô with a total of 45 episodes, with Studio Madhouse working on the production and Crunchyroll holding the worldwide distribution rights of Overlord as of now.
