New significant characters are introduced, and we have a much deeper look at the background story of one of the members of The Pogues. Let's dive right into the details of 'Outer Banks' season 2, and find out how it sets up the story for the future of the series. Warning: 'Outer Banks' season 2 spoiler ahead.

'Outer Banks' Season 2 Synopsis and Ending Explained

The second season of 'Outer Banks' picks up exactly where the first season left off. Sarah and John arrived at Nassau, Bahamas. Upon discovering that John is a fugitive, the captain of the boat Terrance (Terence Rosemore) tried to turn over the couple to the police in an exchange for the $50,000 reward on his capture. John and Sarah managed to escape but later team up with Captain Terrance and his crew to steal the gold, which is still in Ward's house in Nassau. Sadly, their plan failed. Terrance and most of his crew were captured by the police. Ward and Rafe retrieved the gold and sent it to a Swiss bank. John and Sarah managed to evade the police again, thanks to Cleo (Carlacia Grant), a member of Terrance’s crew.

All this time, the Pogues believed that John and Sarah are dead until the two contacted them. A mysterious rich woman named Carla Limbrey also reached out to Pope, claiming he could help John.

Carla Limbrey OB2

Who Is Carla Limbrey?

Carla Limbrey is a wealthy woman from Charleston. Carla told Pope that she can provide evidence that can clear John's name from the murder of Sheriff Peterkin. However, we soon discover that she is no pure good samaritan. She is also on the hunt for the missing treasure, particularly the Cross of Saint Domingo, which she believes can cure her terminal illness.

The Cross of Saint Domingo

Where Is The Cross of Saint Domingo?

John and Sarah reunite with the Pogues in Charleston. Throughout the series, we found out that Pope is a descendant of Denmark Tanny, the sole survivor of the Royal Merchant shipwreck. The Cross of San Domingo was originally on a Spanish ship named San Jose. The crew of Royal Merchant came upon the Spanish boat while it was on fire. Tanny kept a diary of the incident. He wrote that after the cross gets transferred to the Royal Merchant, Captain Limbrey commanded his men to kill the Spanish soldiers. Unfortunately for Limbrey, the Royal Merchant was also destroyed, and neither he nor his men survived the shipwreck. Only Tanny made it to the shore with both the gold treasure and the Cross. He hid the two separately. Tanny ultimately founded a church and became a pastor to the other freed slaves.

The cross is made of gold and expensive gems. But what makes it more important is the Garment of Savior, a Christian relic that can heal any disease. This is why Carla Limbrey is after the cross. John tricks Limbrey to give him the proof of his innocence. Ward took the blame for the crime and seemingly died after his boat exploded.

Pope discovers the cross in the abandoned church that Tanny founded. However, Rafe and Carla's men took the cross away and betrayed her.

The Camerons Take All The Tanny Treasures

Towards the end of season 2, we saw Rafe and his family take the miraculous cross and board a ship to an island near Guadeloupe. They also took Sarah with them. Fortunately, John and his friends managed to board the ship by hiding in a shipping container. They find out that Cleo is among the crew of the ship. The Pogues and Cleo joined forces again to rescue Sarah and take the Cross back.

John manages to rescue Sarah, but the Pogues fail to get the cross, which Pope thinks rightfully belongs to his family. Knowing that it's almost impossible to get the cross back, Pope decides to drop the cross to the ocean using a crane. However, Rafe manages to retrieve the Cross by grabbing one of the ropes attached to it with the help of his crew.

The Pogues swears revenge on behalf of Pope, whose family heirloom remains in the hands of the Camerons.

In addition to the Cross, the Camerons also had the Royal Merchant Gold, easily giving the family millions of worth of Tanny treasure.

Ward

Is Ward Alive?

Unfortunately, Ward is still alive. The cunning patriarch of the Camerons faked his entire death to protect his family. He took the blame to protect his son Rafe, who killed Sheriff Peterkin to prevent his father's arrest. When the police came to arrest Ward, he exploded his boat but managed to swim to safety using scuba gear. Ward was devastated when Sarah chooses his friends over her corrupt family. Rafe told Ward that he will step up as the man of the family now and promises to bring back his sister Sarah.
