'No Time To Die' Ending Explained

Daniel Craig's final outing as James Bond is full of unexpected and explosively heartbreaking scenes. Is this the end of the James Bond franchise?

'No Time To Die'

'No Time To Die' gives the superspy franchise a rather definitive and heartbreaking ending. The film marks Daniel Craig's retirement as James Bond, a role he played for 15 years.

In 'No Time To Die,' Craig's James Bond reemerges, five years after defeating Blofeld. He must rescue his former lover Madeliene (Lea Seydoux) and her daughter Mathilde, held hostage by Bioterrorist Lyutsifer Safin (Rami Malek).

'No Time To Die' contained several easter eggs that paid homage to the previous flicks and novels in the franchise. With the way the film ended, does that mean the entire James Bond franchise is retiring with Craig, too? Ready for some spoilers? Here's everything that happened in 'No Time To Die.'

No Time To Die

'No Time To Die' Synopsis and Ending Explained

Bioterrorist Lyutsifer Safin (Rami Malek) kidnaps Bond's former lover Madeleine Swann (Lea Seydoux) and her daughter Mathilde. He hides them in an old World War II island base between Japan and Russia.

Earlier, Madeleine insisted Mathilde wasn't Bond's daughter, but her striking blue eyes beg to differ.

When Safin was still young, Madeleine's father, the late Mr. White, killed his entire family on behalf of the terrorist group Spectre. As revenge, he killed Madeleine's mother. During this attack, Madeleine got trapped under ice, but Safin saved her.

The sinister terrorist wanted to use her as a pawn to kill Blofeld and end SPECTRE forever.

Safin forced Madeline to join his cause and kill the Spectre using a DNA-based bioweapon called Heracles. Heracles contains nanobots that target specific people.

Unwittingly, Bond completes her mission by killing captive Spectre boss Ernst Stavro Blofeld (Christoph Waltz).

But that's not where Safin's sinister plans end. He intends to launch Heracles globally and infect millions of people. Before Bond can get rid of Safin and stop Project Heracles from spreading, Safin kidnaps Madeleine and Mathilde.

Returning as agent 007, Bond and fellow 00 agent Nomi (Lashana Lynch) go to the island to rescue them and prevent Project Heracles from getting deployed. They seemingly managed to open the silo doors for a missile attack meant to wipe out Safin's lair. Nomi takes Madeleine and Mathilde, while Bond stays to make sure the base gets destroyed.

'No Time To Die': Is Bond Alive?

The silo doors start closing and Bond rushes back to open them. It was a trap.

What follows is a nail-biting fighting sequence of Safin and Bond coming face to face. Safin then starts shooting Bond and infected him with nanobots coded to Madeleine's DNA. That means that he will never be able to touch Madeleine again or it will kill her.

Bond manages to kill Safin and re-opens the silo doors, but he is running out of time. Aware of his upcoming doom, the wounded spy climbs to the roof and calls Madeliene. He tells her he loves her, and bid her a heart-wrenching goodbye.

"You have all the time in the world," he says.

"She does have your eyes," Mathilde answers, confirming that Mathilde is his daughter.

"I know," he replies, as the missiles approach the base. "I know."

In a dramatic sequence, we see Bond getting engulfed by exploding flames.

Unlike the film's title, James Bond finally reached his time to die, the first time in the character's 59-years in cinematic history.

There is no way for James Bond to survive. The missile strike destroyed the entire island, and Safin beat him up pretty bad even before the explosion.

James Bond dies saving the world and not getting the chance to spend time with a daughter he never knew he had.

It's sad to think that Bond will never live a happy life as a family man to Madeleine and Matilde.

What Happens After James Bond's Death?

Nomi, Moneypenny, Tanner, and Q (Naomie Harris, Rory Kinnear, and Ben Whishaw) reunite and make an emotional toast to the fallen hero.

They have all shared some significant moments with Agent 007.

"The proper function of man is to live, not to exist," M reads a quote from author Jack London.

"I shall not waste my days in trying to prolong them. I shall use my time."

This line originally appeared in Bond's obituary when the world thought he died in Ian Fleming's You Only Live Twice novel. Now, it's happening for real.

The film ends with Madeleine driving with her daughter in the picturesque mountainside of Matera, Italy. This is the place where she met Bond at the beginning of the film.

"Mathilde, I'm going to tell you a story about a man," Madeleine tells her daughter. "His name was Bond, James Bond."

The credits roll as Louis Armstrong's We Have All the Time in the World song plays.

The song 'We Have All the Time in the World' plays a significant role in the franchise. It's from the 1969's On Her Majesty's Secret Service, the sixth movie in the James Bond franchise starring George Lazenby in his first and final outing for the character.

The song's title was taken from Bond's final line after his new wife, Tracy, gets fatally shot by Blofeld's men. Craig's Bond also tells Madeleine "You have all the time in the world," before the missile explosion kills him.

In Both films, Bond is ready to leave the deadly world of spycraft behind to settle down. However, both Craig and Lazenby's Bond did not get their heart's desires.

Is This The End Of The James Bond Films?

Although 'No Time To Die' ended in a definitive mode, it seems like it's not the end of the franchise yet.

The final message in the credits promises that "James Bond will return..." Not Agent 007, but James Bond. That means that modern reboots are likely to happen in the future, similar to what director Martin Campbell did twice with 'Goldeneye' and 'Casino Royale.'

Of course, there are no official announcements about the future of the James Bond franchise yet, but we will surely hear about it at the right time.
