Jonathan Kent, son of Clark Kent and Lois Lane, aka the next Superman, is finding his new identity in Son of Kal-El #5. DC Comics said in a statement that Jon is coming out as bisexual in the next issue of the comic book series.

Jon is the protagonist of the Superman: Son of Kal-El series, written by Tom Taylor with art by John Timms. It follows Jon as he becomes Earth's new Superman, taking over from his dad who is away from Earth. He grapples with the immense weight of his new gig. The series' premise has been described as "Truth, Justice, and a Better World."

Without giving too much away, DC has confirmed in a statement that Jon, following his father's footsteps in more than one way, also falls for a reporter. He first forges a friendship with bespectacled reporter Jay Nakamura who has bubble-gum pink hair in the third issue of Son of Kal-El. Jay offers support to Jon who is struggling with his new responsibility. They become romantically involved in the pages of the new Son of Kal-El comic. DC even shared a sneak-peek picture of the two sharing a kiss. The new comic issue will be out on November 9.

"I've always said everyone needs heroes and everyone deserves to see themselves in their heroes and I’m very grateful DC and Warner Bros. share this idea,” Taylor said in the statement. “Superman's symbol has always stood for hope, for truth, and for justice. Today, that symbol represents something more. Today, more people can see themselves in the most powerful superhero in comics." Timms added, “I'm incredibly honored to be working beside Tom on the Superman: Son of Kal-El series showing Jon Kent tackling his complex modern life, while also saving the world from its greatest threats, villains, and menaces.”

This is a step toward making comics more inclusive and representing the LGBTQ+ community. Jon is not the first DC character to come out as bi. In fact, earlier this year, Tim Drake aka Robin, Batman’s loyal sidekick, also came out as bisexual, noted Variety. Other LGBTQ+ DC comic characters include Batwoman, Harley Quinn, and Alan Scott, the first Green Lantern. In the Marvel comics, we have Iceman, America Chavez or Miss America, and Northstar who was one of the first openly gay comic book characters when he came out in 1992.

DC Chief Creative Officer and Publisher Jim Lee said, “We couldn’t be prouder to tell this important story from Tom Taylor and John Timms. We talk a lot about the power of the DC Multiverse in our storytelling and this is another incredible example. We can have Jon Kent exploring his identity in the comics as well as Jon Kent learning the secrets of his family on TV on Superman & Lois. They coexist in their own worlds and times, and our fans get to enjoy both simultaneously.”
