New 'Rocky' Film Reportedly In The Works With Sylvester Stallone Writing And Starring

The legendary Rocky Balboa is reportedly coming back for more pound-for-pound action.

Rocky IV

A new Rocky movie is reportedly in development with Sylvester Stallone set to write and star in the flick.

Sylvester Stallone played the legendary Rocky Balboa in the original 1976 Rocky film. Rocky was regarded as one of the greatest sports films ever, and its success spawned five Rocky sequels and two spin-offs, Creed (2015) and Creed II (2018).

We Got This Covered reports that insider Daniel Richtman claims that a new Rocky movie is in development. Richtman is known for releasing scoops and spilling secrets in the movie and entertainment industry.

There's no official announcement for a new film yet, but if the tipster's reports are correct, this is going to be the seventh Rocky film in the franchise.

The news of a new Rocky film might no longer come as a surprise to some fans.

Rocky IV

Back in May 2019, Stallone announced that he is planning a new Rocky film separate from Creed III. According to Richtman, that project is now in active development with the Hollywood icon set to produce, pen the script, and star in the movie.

We still don't know what the upcoming film will be about, but it's unlikely that Rocky will be back in the boxing ring as the Italian Stallone. Balboa was developed into a father figure/mentor to Adonis Creed (Michael B. Jordan), the son of his deceased rival and friend Apollo Creed in the seventh and eighth spin-off-sequels, Creed.

The shift in Balboa's character from a boxing legend in the first five sequels into Creed's mentor in the Creed franchise is an effective move in prolonging the life and legacy of Rocky. However, if a seventh Rocky film will release, we are expecting to see Rocky take on a more central role again.

Back in 2019, Stallone laid out possible concepts for a new film.

“Rocky meets a young, angry person who got stuck in this country when he comes to see his sister. He takes him into his life, and unbelievable adventures begin, and they wind up south of the border. It’s very, very timely. … Do you tell someone that you just met in the street who’s struggling and homeless to get out, or do you take him in? If you take him in, you’re in trouble.”

Creed

In 2020, Stallone reveals that what he describes as an epilogue to the Rocky story was still in consideration.

When he was asked if there will still be more Rocky films in the future, he answered:

"Well, I believe in the film Creed, that’s possible, yes. But I never say no to Rocky because I have a couple of ideas," the actor said.

"Not so sure; they don’t really involve the ring as much as they should. I’m not so confident that will be exciting enough for the audience. But who knows?"

The Rocky film series was a big success. It has grossed more than $1.7 billion at the worldwide box office, with the 1976 original film, the third (Rocky III) and the seventh spin-off (Creed 2015) received Academy Award nominations.
