Ghostbusters was the supernatural comedy film that was first released as a film in 1984. It was directed and produced by Ivan Reitman and written by Dan Aykroyd and Harold Ramis. Since then the film has had several sequels, reboots, and television series and has become a multi-billion dollar multimedia franchise.

The film had two sequels with the latest one, Ghostbusters: Afterlife, which was released in November 2021. There is more than one sequel planned to follow the third installment. In addition to this, fans of the franchise will be pleased to know that there is also an animated Ghostbusters that will be coming to Netflix.

Sony Pictures Animation will be joining Jason Reitman and Gil Kenan of Ghost Corps, Inc. as executive producers for the series, as reported by Variety. Reitman and Kenan have previously co-written Ghostbusters: Afterlife. But currently, not a lot of details have been revealed. There is no writer attached to the project yet and there have also been no plot details that were shared. Production will be handled by Netflix and Ghost Corps, Inc., which is based at Sony’s Columbia Pictures. Ghost Corps, Inc. is an American production company formed in March 2015 to oversee the Ghostbusters franchise and is a division of Sony Pictures Entertainment's Columbia Pictures.

This is not the first animated Ghostbusters series. Previously, there was The Real Ghostbusters animated series that ran from September 1986 to October 1991. The series served as a spin-off and sequel to the first Ghostbusters film. The story continued the adventures of the four Ghostbusters — Dr. Peter Venkman, Dr. Egon Spengler, Dr. Ray Stantz, Winston Zeddemore, their secretary Janine Melnitz, their accountant Louis, and their mascot Slimer, as they chase and capture rogue spooks, specters, spirits and ghosts around New York City and various other areas of the world.

The new series will follow Ghostbusters: Afterlife which was set thirty-two years after the events of Ghostbusters II. It follows a single mother and her children who move to an Oklahoma farm they inherited from her estranged father Egon Spengler, a member of the original Ghostbusters. It is unclear if the animated series will follow the events of the film since there are three more sequels that are planned with the surviving three actors of the original Ghostbusters team. The first film starred Bill Murray, Aykroyd, and Ramis as Venkman, Stantz, and Spengler, three eccentric parapsychologists who start a ghost-catching business in New York City.

The film was a huge hit and was the second-highest-grossing film of 1984 in the United States and Canada and the highest-grossing comedy ever at the time. It also received a lot of critical acclaim and has since become a classic cultural phenomenon.
