On My Block is an American teen comedy-drama about four smart, funny, and streetwise teens from Freeridge, a rough inner-city Los Angeles neighborhood. Their lifelong friendship is put to the test as they begin high school. The show was created by Lauren Iungerich, Eddie Gonzalez, and Jeremy Haft.
The first season of the show was released on March 16, 2018. It was followed by three more seasons, with the latest one premiering on October 4, 2021. The show was well-liked by viewers and critics alike and even won the Teen Choice Awards for Choice Breakout TV Show in 2018. Here's what's in store for the future of the show:
In 2021, the show was renewed for the fourth season. At the same time, it was announced that the fourth season would also serve as the last season. In the finale of the third season, there was a time jump during which we saw that the friend group had fallen apart. The same was addressed in the fourth season after Ruby, Jamal, Monse, and Cesar had gone their separate ways.
The show came to an end as the foursome's high school journey came to an end as well. Just like in real life, their goodbyes also came after their high school prom and other misadventures that go into prepping for one. Along the way, they find their way back to each other and reunite one last time before going away in their separate ways. The show was closed in a definite manner and will not be coming back for a fifth season. The cast members even said their emotional goodbyes to the show.

Just before the fourth season premiere, a spin-off show was announced. The final season of On My Block acts as a segue to the spinoff. “Co-creating and running On My Block was and will always be a highlight of my life,” Iungerich said. “I am so proud to pass the baton to my incredible partners Eddie and Jeremy and the incomparable Jamie Uyeshiro, who rocked it in the writers' room from day one. There are more stories to tell of our beloved Freeridge, and I cannot wait to continue to work with this talented team.”
The spin-off show is titled Freeridge and stars Bryana Salaz, Keyla Monterroso Mejia, Ciara Riley Wilson, and Shiv Pai. It follows the story of a new crew of friends who may or may not have unleashed a deadly curse, kicking off an unforgettable adventure. Freeridge premiered on Netflix on February 2nd, 2023.
Tracey Pakosta, Netflix’s head of comedy, said, "While this chapter is closing for our OG squad this October as they reach the end of High School, we are excited to bring a brand new cast of characters and stories to life in this On My Block spin-off." Pakosta added, "There are so many more stories to tell in Freeridge and we’re grateful to continue this journey with Lauren, Eddie, Jeremy, Jamie Uyeshiro, and Jamie Dooner."
