The film is based on the 2017 novel, The Stand-In by Steve Bloom who also wrote the screenplay.
The Perfect Date is the 2019 teen rom-com film starring Noah Centineo (To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before), Laura Marano (Lady Bird), Camila Mendes (Riverdale), Odiseas Georgiadis (Trinkets), and two-time Emmy nominee Matt Walsh (Veep). The film was released on April 12, 2019, on Netflix. It is based on the 2017 novel, The Stand-In by Steve Bloom who also wrote the screenplay and directed by Chris Nelson.
The film received generally positive reviews and reportedly had been viewed by 48 million households in its first four weeks of release. Many people are now wondering if there will be a movie sequel. Here's what we know:
The story of the film is originally based on the novel by Bloom. The book is a stand-alone book and is not a part of a series that would have otherwise provided source material for the sequel film to be based on, like the Crazy Rich Asian movie and the much-anticipated sequel film. Moreover, in the film, the plot comes to a close with no open endings and there is a perfect conclusion to the developments in the film. The author, who also wrote the screenplay, managed to tie the story together well in the end.
Considering this, the chances of there being a sequel are not that high. But there has been no official announcement from Netflix about a sequel yet either. The popularity of the actors and how the film got positive reviews could urge Netflix to strike a deal for The Perfect Date sequel.
The first film followed the story of Brooks Rattigan who creates a dating app wherein he plays the role of “stand-in” boyfriend for every kind of situation you can imagine. Through the journey of being a different person every night of the week, he finds out that the real Brooks isn’t who he thought at all and to his surprise falls for the real girl of his dreams. (Warning! Spoiler ahead!) The heartwarming story ends with Brooks and Celia admitting to their feelings for each other. But they are supposed to be attending different colleges the following year.
The sequel could perhaps pick up with a focus on their long-distance relationship. This time with an app that will help them keep their relationship flourishing despite the distance. But Netflix has not yet said anything about a possible sequel.
The cast will have to see the reprisal of Centineo as Brooks and Marano as Celia. Georgiadis who played the role of his best friend, Murph will probably also be included in the sequel. Mendes as Shelby may not be returning, but a bit of ex-flame drama can't be ruled out. We may also see new faces from their respective universities who may play a role in their relationship.
There has been no confirmation about a possible sequel yet. As for the first film, production started in early 2018 and the film was released in early 2019. If the sequel film is confirmed soon, we can expect to see The Perfect Date 2 in the latter half of 2023.
