Netflix Finally Reveals The Cast Of The Live-Action 'One Piece' Series

The Netflix project is going full steam ahead and the actors who will be playing the Straw Hat Pirates have finally been announced.

One Piece is a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Eiichiro Oda and later adapted into an anime series that has been airing since 1999. The story follows Monkey D. Luffy, who sets off on a journey to find the coveted treasure that will allow him to proclaim himself the King of the Pirates.

One Piece became the best-selling manga series in history in 2012 and as of 2021, 490 million copies of the manga have been sold worldwide. The anime also gained worldwide popularity and was 2018's most binge-watched television show in America. In 2020, it was announced by Oda himself that his work would be getting a live-action adaptation from Netflix.

The production had come to a lengthy halt due to the pandemic and finally picked up again earlier this year. Steven Maeda made the announcement on Instagram stating: "A year ago COVID kicked us out of our offices and delayed production. But we haven’t stopped working to bring One Piece to life. Thanks for your patience, your questions, and many great suggestions." The project is going full steam ahead and the cast has finally been announced.

One Piece Live-Action Cast

The series has been ordered for 10 episodes initially. It will follow the East Blue saga of Eiichiro Oda's original manga, as per Comic Book. In this first adventure, Luffy recruits his crew, the Straw Hat Pirates. The crew comprises his comrades: Zoro, Nami, Usopp, and Sanji.

The Straw Hat crew has been cast and was introduced on the official One Piece Twitter page. Here is who Netflix has recruited to be a part of the live-action series, introduced in wanted posters:

Iñaki Godoy (Who Killed Sara?) will be playing Monkey D. Luffy.

Mackenyu (Ruroni Kenshin: Final Chapter) will play Roronoa Zoro.

Emily Rudd (Fear Street) will be playing Nami.

Jacob Romero Gibson (Greenleaf) will be playing Usopp.

Taz Skylar (Boiling Point) will play Sanji.

Oda shared a statement about the casting and as per Deadline, stated: "We decided on this cast after numerous discussions involving people around the world! These are the people who will be our Straw Hat Pirates! It’ll take a bit more time to get this show done, but we’ll continue to do our best to deliver a show that we’re confident will be enjoyed by everyone around the world! Look forward to more updates in the future!”

Maeda and Owens added: “We are so excited to set sail with this amazing and talented cast! Finding the right people to pull off the looks, emotions, and actions of the iconic Straw Hats was a long and challenging (and fun!) process. Much like the search for the One Piece itself. But we have finally found the perfect fits! They have already begun working very hard to bring these characters to life. You will come to know and love them just as much as their manga counterparts. All of us can’t wait to show you what we’ve come up with! Onward to adventure!”
