The first live-action series in the Ju-On franchise is set to release on July 3.
Suckers for horror and spooky stuff will have something to binge watch soon as Netflix is set to release its take on The Grudge in a series entitled Ju-On: Origins.
Ju-On: Origins (Ju-on: Noroi no Ie in Japanese) is set to debut worldwide on July 3 in partnership with NBCUniversal Entertainment Japan.
This is the first live-action series in the Ju-On franchise.
Judging from the trailer, the series looks promising! It's dark, and creepy bringing back similar energy to the early 2000's Japanese film that we loved (or hated, if horror movies give you nightmares).
Watch the trailer and see for yourself.
Ju-On: Origins stars Yoshiyoshi Arakawa, Yuina Kuroshiman, and Ririka.
Its official synopsis says, "The J-Horror classic franchise was based on real events that occurred over four decades - and the truth is even more terrifying."
Well, the movies in the franchise have been terrifying enough already, and it's exciting to see how Netflix would make it even more horrifying as they promised.
The series is in Japanese and it centers around paranormal investigator Odajima (Yoyoshi) and a television talent named Haruka Honjo (Yuina) who keeps hearing footsteps in her apartment in the middle of the night.
The two got interested in the iconic haunted house and Odajima starts to investigate.
Will they be able to uncover the mysteries of the haunting, or will they succumb to the evil forces that lurk in the house?
We have two months to find out.
Shō Miyake is set to direct the series while Yō Takahashi and Takashige Ichise will pen the script.
Other stars include Ririka, Kōki Osamura, Mai Takahashi, Kai Inowaki, Ryūshin Tei, Yuya Matsuura, Kaho Tsuchimura, Tokio Emoto, Nobuko Sendō, and Kana Kurashina.
If you are familiar with Ju-On or The Grudge franchise, you would know that the curse spreads like a disease.
In 2002's Ju-On: The Grudge directed by Takashi Shimizu, a father murders his wife after discovering she is in love with another man. He also killed his son and their family cat. The murder resulted in a curse.
Whoever enters the murder house in Nerima, Tokyo gets consumed by the curse which spreads to the place where they die and affects those who come in.
Although this is, in fact, the third film in the Ju-On series, it became popular because this is where the 2004 American remake The Grudge was based on. The first two films Ju-On: The Curse and Ju-On The Curse 2 were both filmed within 9 days only.
Since then, a lot of sequels and reboots have released and the latest film titled The Grudge was released earlier this year.
The Grudge 2020 is an American entry in the series and takes place at the same time in 2004. It was directed by Nicolas Pesce who put an effort to preserve the Japanese version's original vibe.
