Mr. & Mrs. Smith, like the 2005 spy thriller of the same name, was a hit when it launched on Amazon Prime in February. After a casting mishap with Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Donald Glover and Maya Erskine played John and Jane Smith, with Glover serving as co-creator and executive producer alongside showrunner and co-creator Francesca Sloane.
The pair play a married assassin couple recruited by intelligence agency Hihi, which pairs them and moves them to a brownstone in New York City in season one. They work as a team and discover that other spies are also on high-risk missions around the world.
Fans are curious to see if Glover and Erskine will return and what the plot will be in season two after the first season’s spectacular finale. Here’s what we know so far.
Is Mr. & Mrs. Smith: Season 2 Happening?
Amazon renewed Mr. & Mrs. Smith for a second season in May 2024, three months after its premiere.
“We are excited to announce that a second season of our groundbreaking spy series, Mr. & Mrs. Smith, is in the works for our global Prime Video customers,” Amazon MGM Studios head Jennifer Salke stated in a press release. “The success of the first season, with its incredibly modern, sexy reinvention of the original film, is a testament to the brilliant creators Donald Glover and Francesca Sloane. We are proud to bring you another season filled with unforgettable journeys and new adventures.”
When Is The Release Date Of Mr. & Mrs. Smith Season 2?
Amazon has not set a release date for season two, and it’s unknown whether the series has started filming. In May, Sloane revealed in an interview with Entertainment Weekly that the team “didn’t even get to start writing [season two] yet,” so it may be a while before the show returns.
We can speculate that season two may air in February 2025.
Who Will Be In The Cast Of Mr. & Mrs. Smith Season 2?
Glover and Erskine were not expected to star in season two when the show was revived in May, Variety reported. If you seen the ending, you may understand. Glover and Sloane oppose this.
“Who says we’re not in it? Maybe we are. Maybe we aren’t,” Glover teased during an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live! Similarly, Slone addressed the casting rumors in her interview with Entertainment Weekly. “I was just talking to Donald last night about this and we were laughing, because one of the pieces of press said, ‘according to our sources,’ and we’re like, ‘Who are these sources?’” she said. “We wrote a cliffhanger, we thought about it long and hard. It was one of the first things that we wrote. Why would we ruin a cliffhanger based on a headline? Maya and Donald may be dead; they may not be dead.”
What Will Happen Mr. & Mrs. Smith Season 2?
We know nothing about season two, but it will focus on the Smiths—whether Glover and Erskine or not. The spies may go on more adventurous missions around the world, but we won’t know until the following season.
