'Monster': Everything We Know So Far

'Monster' premiered in Sundance three years ago, and finally, it is about to have its global release through Netflix.

Directed by Anthony Mandler, the film is based on the novel of the same name by Walter Dean Myers.

Radha Blank, Cole Whiley, and Janece Shaffer penned the on-screen adaptation.

'Monster' follows a young black boy who gets entangled in a messy court battle that will potentially take away his chance at a better future.

The film will likely spark huge social interest, given the current Black Lives Matter movement and the long history of oppression on African-American citizens.

When Will 'Monster' Release On Netflix?

'Monster' is confirmed to release on Netflix on Friday, May 7th, 2021.

The legal drama film premiered at Sundance Film Festival in 2018 and was previously called 'All Rise.' After acquiring the rights to the film, Netflix changed its name to 'Monster,' in line with the title of its source material.


What Is The Plot Of 'Monster'?

Harlem honor student Steve Harmon has an eye and passion for photography, but his seemingly bright future turned bleak after he gets charged with murder after he gets entangled in a bodega robbery gone wrong. What follows is a harrowing and complex legal battle that flips his world upside down. Will he be able to prove his innocence? Or will stereotypes lead him to life-long imprisonment?

Regardless if he is guilty or not, Steve becomes a pawn in the hands of the bias justice system, filled with cynical authorities that paint him as a "monster".

The unfortunate incident forces him to reflect on his own identity as he faces the possibility that he could be spending all his life in prison.


Who Are In The Cast Of 'Monster'? 

Kelvin Harrison Jr. plays Steve Harmon, the young guy who faces murder charges.

This is the third time for Harrison to appear in a Netflix original after 'Mudbound' and 'The Trials of the Chicago Seven'.

Jennifer Hudson and Jeffrey Wright play Mr. and Mrs. Harmon.

Jennifer Ehle stars as Katherine O’Brien, Tim Blake Nelson portrays Leroy Sawicki, and Rakim “A$AP Rocky” Mayers as William King.

Paul Ben-Victor as Anthony Petrocelli, John David Washington as Richard “Bobo” Evans, Mikey Madison as Alexandra Floyd, Jonny Coyne as Detective Karyl, and Lovie Simone as Renee Pickford, among others.
