Young Gru continues his quest to become the most despicable villain, but his distracted minion Otto might just have traded his lifelong goal with a pet rock.
The epic adventures (and misadventures) of the little Gru and his minions continue in the upcoming sequel, 'Minions: Rise of Gru'.
The highly-anticipated sequel should've been here last year, but the Coronavirus pandemic has postponed the film several times.
'Minions: Rise of Gru' will continue to feature the young Gru's quest to become the world's worst villain. It will see the return of our favorite voice actors and will also introduce new cast additions.
Here is everything you need to know.
'Minions: Rise of Gru' will release in theaters next year, July 1, 2022.
The anticipated sequel got delayed several times.
'Minions: Rise of Gru' was supposed to release on July 3, 2020, but was delayed to July 2, 2021, because of the Covid-19 pandemic. Illumination Mac Guff' had to undergo a temporary closure due in response to the Covid-19 restrictions, and this resulted in delays in the production of the animated film.
In March 2021, we received an announcement that his release date is further delayed for a year. It is now set to come out on July 1, 2022. We have seen several films affected by the pandemic which managed to get back to and release on an earlier schedule. We don't know if this will also be the case for 'Minions: Rise of Gru,' but a lot can happen in a year, so the release date can still get shuffled in the future. We will update this space once there are changes in the release schedules.
A full-length trailer of 'Minions: Rise of Gru' was released in May 2020, and it unveils the expected plot of the sequel.
In the trailer, a preteen Gru goes on an interview to become part of The Vicious 6. The interviewers underestimated his potential to become a villain, but Gru manages to catch their attention after he steals the prized stone that belongs to them. The villains tried to run after the young Gru, but he was quick enough to ride their getaway bike along with his minions. However, Gru made a grave mistake after entrusting the stone to Otto, one of his minions.
Gru made a clear instruction for Otto to bring the stone back to their lair while Gru distracts The Vicious 6. But to Gru's dismay, Otto decided to trade the precious stone with a pet rock along the way.
'Minions: Rise of Gru' will feature the similar minion's energy we have come to love. Expect exciting adventures and plenty of epic failures with these distracted but incredibly cute, yellow creatures around. As its title suggest, the sequel will continue to chronicle Gru's rise as the greatest villain the world has ever seen. He will have to recover the missing stone while The Vicious 6 continues to trace his whereabouts.
The sequel is bringing back the main voice actors who previously gave life to our favorite characters.
Steve Carell is coming back to voice Gru, but the actor will have to pinch his voice to portray a younger version of the character. Pierre Coffin will provide the voices for Minions Kevin, Stuart, Bob, and others in the film. Julie Andrews is also coming back as Marlena Gru, Gru's fastidious mother. Russell Brand will be playing Dr. Nefarious, the great inventor who will become Gru's biggest partner.
There will also be new characters to look forward to—Taraji P. Henson as Belle Bottom, the leader of The Vicious 6.
Michelle Yeoh stars as Master Chow, while Jean-Claude Van Damme is Jean Clawed, the giant lobster-clawed member of The Vicious 6.
The rest of the Vicious 6 members are Lucy Lawless as Nunchuck, Dolph Lundgren as Svengeance, and Danny Trejo as Stronghold.
We already have a full-length trailer released in 2020. Since this trailer was released last year, we will most likely receive new trailers as the release date for 'Minions: Rise of Gru' gets closer. We will update this space once more trailers get released.
