Mark Ruffalo And Hugh Laurie Join Netflix Series ‘All The Light We Cannot See’

The four-part limited series is an adaptation of Anthony Doerr’s Pulitzer Prize-winning bestseller.

Mark Ruffalo and Hugh Laurie will star in Netflix’s All The Light We Cannot See, alongside newcomer Aria Mia Loberti, reports Deadline. The four-part limited series is an adaptation of Anthony Doerr’s Pulitzer Prize-winning bestseller and comes from Shawn Levy’s 21 Laps Entertainment. The production company, 21 Laps, was behind popular projects such as Stranger Things, Arrival, Netflix’s Shadow and Bone, as well as the recently-released movie Free Guy. Steven Knight (Peaky Blinders) is adapting the novel and Levy (Stranger Things, Free Guy) will direct all four episodes in the series.

The story revolves around a blind French teenager named Marie-Laure LeBlanc whose path crosses with Werner, a German soldier, as they both try to survive the devastation of World War II in occupied France. The role of Werner has yet to be cast. Three-time Oscar nominee and Emmy winner Ruffalo has been confirmed to play Daniel LeBlanc and Laurie will portray Etienne LeBlanc. Daniel LeBlanc is Marie's father, a caring and clever principal locksmith at the Museum of Natural History in Paris. Etienne, Marie's great-uncle, is an eccentric and reclusive World War I hero suffering from PTSD.

Speaking of the newcomer Loberti, Levy shared, “To find an actress to play the iconic Marie-Laure – a young blind woman whose greatest strength is the tenacity of her hope and the power of her voice across the airwaves during wartime – was no small challenge. We searched the world and reviewed thousands of auditions. We never thought our path would lead to someone who has not only never acted professionally, but never auditioned before. It was a jaw-drop moment when we first saw Aria Mia Loberti, who is both a natural performer and an advocate for disability equity and representation. I can’t wait to tell this beautiful story with her at the center.”

The book was published in 2014 and won praise and critical acclaim as well as a Pulitzer Prize in 2015 and the Andrew Carnegie Medal for Excellence in Fiction the same year. All The Light We Cannot See has spent more than 200 weeks on the New York Times best-seller list and sold more than 5.7 million copies in North America and another 9.5 million copies worldwide.

Mark Ruffalo is currently starring in Netflix’s sci-fi adventure time-travel movie The Adam Project, directed and produced by Shawn Levy. The 54-year-old will be starring alongside Ryan Reynolds, Zoe Saldana, Jennifer Garner, and Catherine Keener. The actor will also get back to being the green superhero, The Hulk, in the Disney+/Marvel series, She-Hulk. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Hugh Laurie is working on writing and directing an adaptation of Agatha Christie’s Why Didn’t They Ask Evans? for streamer BritBox. The 62-year-old is currently filming The Canterville Ghost, based on the Oscar Wilde story, alongside his longtime pal and comedy partner, Stephen Fry.
