The series tells the story of Alex (Qualley), a young single mother who works as a housecleaner to survive. She made a brave decision to take her daughter and leave her abusive partner. Sadly, her low salary barely makes ends meet.
Alex will have to battle poverty, homelessness, and bureaucracy, all while trying to win custody over her daughter. Despite the countless challenges, she must remain strong and driven to provide her daughter a better life.
The upcoming series will be a roller coaster of emotions. It is an inspiring tale of a mother's resilience. A poignant memoir of strife and victories. As per Netflix, 'Maid' will be "a beautiful, alive, gritty, and inspiring exploration of poverty in America."
Real-life mother and daughter actresses Margaret Qualley and Andie MacDowell will play the lead roles. Their casting marks the first time that an actual mother and daughter duo will play fictional mother and daughter characters on screen.
Qualley will play Alex, the fictionalized version of author Stephanie Land. Qualley is mostly known for starring in Quentin Tarantino's comedy-drama 'Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.' Deadline announced her casting for the upcoming Netflix series back in August 2020.
Qualley's real-life mother, Andie MacDowell, will play the role of Paula, Alex's mom.
The rest of the cast includes 'Love Simon' actorNick Robinson, 'Twilight' star Billy Burke, 'Dreamgirls' actress Anika Noni Rose, House's Tracy Vilar, and BJ Harrison from 'Chilling Adventures of Sabrina'.
Netflix has already released the official teaser and full trailer for 'Maid.' The teaser sees Alex talking about a heroine of a story she is working on. Alex's heroine lives a perfect life and does not have to experience any conflict. It's easy to deduce that Alex's created character reflects a life she wanted to live--a life far away from struggles and where she is free from the shackles of poverty.
The full trailer shows a glimpse of Alex's struggle as a single mother after she leaves her abusive partner.

'Maid' is currently billed as a limited series, which means that there are no current plans for a second season. The first season will likely cover the entire source material and conclude the story in a definite manner. The memoir only has 288 pages, which is quite short for a two-season order.
