The Rogue One and Casino Royale actor is confirmed to replace Johnny Depp in the Fantastic Beasts franchise.
Mads Mikkelsen is confirmed to replace Johnny Depp as Gellert Grindelwald in Fantastic Beasts 3.
The Rogue One star is officially replacing Depp in the Fantastic Beasts franchise, ending weeks of rumors since the Pirates of the Caribbean actor's resignation from the Wizard role.
Earlier this month, Johnny Depp shared the heartbreaking news to fans about his resignation from Fantastic Beasts 3 after Warner Bros asked him to do so.
The request came following Depp's unsuccessful libel trial against The Sun's publisher over an article that called him a "wife-beater.
."In an Instagram post, Depp said that he ‘respected and agreed’ to the request, and added that he plans to continue to fight to prove his innocence.
Since Depp's announcement, rumors circulated that Mikkelsen had been chosen to replace Depp for the role.
However, Mikkelsen earlier said that he only knew as much as the newspapers did and added that he was "waiting for that phone call."
Now, the rumors are made official, and Mikkelsen has officially accepted the role, Entertainment Weekly reports.
Fantastic Beasts 3 is currently in production at Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden outside of London.
The film production has recently commenced since the lockdowns brought by the Coronavirus pandemic in March.
Depp had only filmed one scene for the upcoming third installment before the court ruling, as producers reportedly wanted to see how the case turns out.
Following Depp's resignation, fans rallied behind Depp's back and petitioned for his return for the film.
However, Depp's ‘pay or play’ contract allowed him to keep the $10 million pay for the role, MailOline reports.
Following Depp's announcement to resign from the role, Warner Brothers issued a statement thanking the actor and confirming re-casting for the role.
"Johnny Depp will depart the Fantastic Beasts franchise. We thank Johnny for his work on the films to date," Warner Brothers said in a statement and published by WeGotThisCovered, adding: "Fantastic Beasts 3 is currently in production, and the role of Gellert Grindelwald will be recast. The film will debut in theatres worldwide in the summer of 2022."
The film now has an initial release date of July 15, 2022.
Grindelwald first appeared in the film series in a cameo in the 2016 movie Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. The character returned in Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald.
Depp helped designed Grindelwald's appearance, and with a new actor set to play the role, it remains unknown how much of the character's presentation will be kept for Mikkelsen's portrayal.
Fantastic Beasts 3 is helmed by longtime Harry Potter franchise director David Yates and is based on a screenplay by author J.K. Rowling and Steve Kloves.Disclosure: This post uses affiliate links from online retailers that allow readers to purchase merchandise, for which we may or may not receive a commission.
