My heart was beating faster than it should have been and I was shaking a bit. My natural anxiety was taking its toll on my body and Kate’s offer was the initiator. I sucked it up, trying to remain as put-together as possible, and said, “Of course.”
She smiled. I smiled back and I leaned my head closer to hers bringing our lips nearer. She closed her eyes and at that moment I knew that we were about to kiss. Suddenly someone knocked on the door. “Kate! Open up!” I heard Samantha’s voice on the other end.
Kate opened her eyes before our lips touched then said, “I should probably go get that.”
“Yeah.” I leaned back on the chair, licking my lips as Kate got up to get the door but I quickly grabbed her hand when I noticed the shadows below the door. The shadows were clear as day and it was obvious that Samantha wasn’t the only person there.
“What?”
“Someone else is at the door. It could be your father.”
“Well, you should go hide just in case.”
“Don’t let them know I’m here.”
“Okay.”
I then ran upstairs towards Kate’s room as Kate briskly walked in the opposite direction towards the door and answered it. I shuffled under her bed and listened intently to what was going on downstairs. I heard a lot of loud complaining that mostly came out of Samantha’s mouth. But I also heard the slow and chilling sound of footsteps coming up the stairs. My heart raced as the sound got louder and louder and it became apparent that the person was heavy, robust, and for some reason, I suspected, not very nice.
