We've got all the details regarding the return of the Netflix show Locke & Key
Is Locke & Key going to return for a new season? Well, this isn't a difficult question to answer, given the show's massive popularity on the streaming platform. Showrunner Carlton Cuse was so positive of the show's renewal that he already started work on new episodes even before it was greenlit. Let's dive into everything we know so far about Locke & Key Season 2.
Netflix has officially renewed Locke & Key for season 2. The announcement was made late March on the show's Twitter page. The caption read: "more keys, more demons, more aloha Locke & Key is officially returning for season two!!"

We've already established that the show has been renewed for a new season. However, can we expect the new season anytime soon? Well, Netflix doesn't always stick to an annual cycle, but given that season 1 was released on February 7th, 2020, we can expect season 2 to hit our screens in mid-2021 for the earliest. But with the current health crisis, there might be significant delays in production.
But even before the show was renewed, the scripts were already being written. Producer Carlton Cuse told Collider in February:
We’re in the middle of writing season 2, so we’re optimistic and hopeful that we’re gonna get a chance to make season 2. We very much know what it is because Meredith [Averill, executive producer] and I are in the middle of overseeing the writers’ room and we’re working on that right now.
At the end of Locke & Key season 1, we found out that Dodge is still alive and hunting for the keys. The first season touched on volumes 1-4 of the comics. It may seem like the creators of the show will soon run out of source material, but Meredith Averill thinks otherwise. In an interview with THR, she said: "The world Joe and Gabe created is so rich with so much potential for places to go that I feel like we have many stories we want to tell. The stories we tell in season one are launching points for many of the stories that have yet to come."
The other creator, Carlton Cuse, said, in the same interview:
"Things are not ideal at the start of season two. That's how one should want it [as a storyteller]. Dodge has turned out to be even more formidable than they could have imagined. But by the same token, across the first season, our kids have come to learn that they are the new keepers of the keys and that they have the responsibility that goes with that. Both sides have stepped up their game for what's going to happen in season two."
We could probably expect most of the original cast to return, but any new cast members are yet to be confirmed. Right now, we can expect Jackson Robert Scott to return as Bode Locke, Connor Jessup as Tyler Locke, Emilia Jones as Kinsey Locke, Sherri Saum as Ellie Whedon, Griffin Gluck as Gabe, Darby Stanchfield as Nina Locke and Laysla De Oliveira as Dodge.
Given that filming has yet to begin for the second season, a trailer is not likely to come anytime soon. However, a teaser might be right around the corner. For now, let's just enjoy the trailer for the first season.
