Lawyer Shares Detail In Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck’s Divorce That’s ‘Unheard Of’ In Celebrity Divorces

After two years of marriage to Ben Affleck, Jennifer Lopez filed for divorce last week, leaving “Bennifer” fans all around the world devastated.

On August 20, exactly two years after the star-studded couple’s extravagant Georgia wedding, Lopez submitted the paperwork.

Before Lopez filed for divorce, there had been long-standing allegations that Affleck and the Atlas actress were having marital problems. Last month, the couple listed their Beverly Hills property for sale.

Since Lopez filed, more details on the A-list couple’s breakup have surfaced, including the fact that they split up formally back in April.

‘Irreconcilable differences’ was the explanation given by the 55-year-old for their breakup.

Evan Schein of the New York family law firm Berkman Bottger Newman & Schein gave UNILAD an explanation of what this entails in detail. “Irreconcilable differences is essentially no fault divorce and allows one spouse to file for divorce without alleging grounds or fault,” he said. It is common practice to file for divorce using this word.”

Schein also made a comment regarding Lopez’s lack of legal representation when she filed the documents.

“It’s absolutely unusual for a celebrity to file for divorce without a lawyer,” he stated. “This is almost unheard of especially when finances are not an issue. It will be interesting to see how this plays out.”

Additionally, rumors have it that Affleck and Lopez did not draft a prenuptial agreement before to their marriage two years ago.

Despite this, Schein believes that the celebrity couple’s divorce won’t go on too long in contrast to other well-known, acrimonious splits, such as the ten-year legal struggle between Arnold Schwarzenegger and Maria Shriver.

The attorney explained to us: “It is hard to imagine that the celebrity couple did not have a prenup given their status and their respective assets and wealth.

“If they have a prenup in place, then most of the financial terms of their divorce will have already been agreed upon.

“If there is no prenup in place, then there will be many more assets to identify and divide and claims that each may make.”

Schein continued: “While having a prenup in place can definitely expedite the divorce, in this particular case and given the relatively short marriage, even in the absence of a prenup, I do not see this celebrity divorce being drawn out.

“It would be in both of their interests to resolve things quickly and out of the public spotlight.”
