The Daniel Craig starrer is in post-production and is the sequel to the much acclaimed 'Knives Out.'
Knives Out was a hit mystery film that came out in 2019. It was directed by Rian Johnson and starred Daniel Craig, Chris Evans, Ana de Armas, Jamie Lee Curtis, Michael Shannon, Don Johnson, Toni Collette, Lakeith Stanfield, Katherine Langford, Jaeden Martell, and Christopher Plummer.
It follows renowned detective Benoit Blanc (Craig), who investigates the mysterious death of the patriarch of a wealthy and dysfunctional family. Johnson was inspired by the queen of detective novels, Agatha Christie, to create a murder mystery film. It garnered critical acclaim and earned $311.4 million worldwide. Netflix acquired the rights to two future installments of the film for $450 million, with Craig reprising his role in both.
Knives Out 2 is on its way, and here's everything you need to know about it.
Johnson has been working on the plot of Knives Out 2 much before it was even acquired by Netflix. Wanting to follow in the footsteps of Christie, he told Screenrant after the first film, "I would love to. We'll see how this one does, you know. But if this movie does alright, if I can get together with Daniel every few years and do a new Benoit Blanc mystery? New location, new cast, new mystery. It'd be so much fun."
Craig will be returning as Blanc to solve another mystery. Much like how Christie's Poirot has solved a wide variety of crimes, Johnson is setting up Blanc for a new challenge. Although specific details were not divulged, Johson told SiriusXM, "There's so many different things you can do with it. And that's what's fun about it. You look at Agatha Christie's books, and it's not like every single one is a mansion, a library, and a detective. Besides the setting, she also explored a bunch of different subgenres. She found a different narrative way into each of them."
Craig is confirmed to be reprising his role, and the rest of the cast will include big names such as Dave Bautista (Guardians of the Galaxy), Edward Norton (Fight Club), singer Janelle Monáe (Hidden Figures), Kathryn Hahn (WandaVision), Kate Hudson (Almost Famous), and Leslie Odom Jr. (Hamilton). Actors Ethan Hawke (Training Day), Madelyn Cline (Outer Banks), and Jessica Henwick (Game of Thrones) were also added as part of the cast.
The film started with the shoot in June 2021 on an island in Greece and went on till July. Johnson then took to Twitter to confirm that principal photography was halfway through and filming would continue in other locations. Principal photography was then officially concluded on September 13, 2021, which Johnson announced by sharing a black-and-white photo on his Instagram of the Empire State Building in New York City.
Presently, the movie is set to be released in mid-late 2022, but an exact date has not been confirmed yet.
