‘Kingdom’ Season 3: Everything We Know So Far

It’s been more than three years since ‘Kingdom’ season 2 dropped on Netflix, and fans have been patiently waiting for season 3 to appease us from the cliffhanging ending. ‘Kingdom‘ is a South Korean political period horror thriller show that follows an unnatural plague that resurrects the dead. ‘Kingdom‘ has become one of the biggest and most successful Asian Originals on Netflix. Its debut was met with overwhelmingly positive reviews. Let us find out if the series is returning for more.

Will There Be ‘Kingdom’ Season 3?

Sadly, Netflix has not announced the renewal of ‘Kingdom’ for season 3 yet and it seems likely that the show will never return. It’s been three years since season 2 and two years since the special bonus episode. The special bonus episode focuses on the life of Ashin, the mysterious woman who appeared in season 2’s closing scene. The special episode is called ‘Kingdom: Ashin of the North,’ and it delves into the origin of the saengsacho (the resurrection plant).

The arrival of the special episode gave us some hope that the zombie series will return for season 3. Speaking about ‘Kingdom: Ashin of the North,’ director Kim Sung Hoon said via Soompi:

“If the first season served as the cornerstone of the world, ‘Kingdom: Ashin of the North’ will be a stepping stone to go beyond ‘Kingdom 3.’”

We will update this space once the series is officially picked up for season 3.

When Will ‘Kingdom’ Season 3 Release?

The third season of ‘Kingdom’ has not been renewed yet. Hence, there is still no release date available. The Korean zombie series premiered six episodes on Netflix on January 25, 2019. Another six episodes were released when it returned for season 2 on March 13, 2020, while a special episode titled ‘Kingdom: Ashin of the North’ was released on Netflix on July 23, 2021.

If Netflix renews the series this year, then there is a chance that we will see ‘Kingdom’ Season 3 in 2025.

We will continue to monitor the latest updates and keep you posted.

What Is The Plot Of ‘Kingdom’ Season 3?

Warning: Season 2 spoilers ahead

The second season has left plenty of avenues to explore should the show return for season 3.

Season 3 will likely pick up on where season 2 ended, seven years and three months since the initial zombie outbreak and Prince Chang’s fake death. Through Young-Shin, it is revealed that the royal Highness has been studying the resurrection plant, hunting it all over Korea. We found out that the mysterious plant had been growing in regions all over the country. The common folk gained access to the plants through a mysterious merchant from the Chinese/Korean border.

That mysterious plant seller is Ashin (played by Jun Ji-hyun), and she was the focus of the Kingdom special episode that was released in July.

The official trailer of the special episode has already been released, and it reveals Ashin’s true intentions. She is seeking vengeance after the Joseon (Prince Chang’s people) denied her justice after her village was mercilessly attacked.

If the show returns for season 3, Ashin and the Prince will likely face each other in a battle.

Meanwhile, there is also a question regarding the new prince. When he was young, he seemed to be immune to the worms that caused the zombie transformation. When he got older, a single remaining parasite found its way into his brain. This means that the prince is at the risk of becoming undead. However, the prince has stayed immune to the parasite for so long. Hence, there might be a chance that he would be a special case. Will, he became a mix of human and undead instead? We will have to wait for season 3 to find out.

Above all, there is a danger looming for another outbreak in the north. Prince Chang, Seobi, and his guard went north and came across an abandoned village. They soon discovered that the village had become infected and that there were plenty of zombies hidden among the trees. With only three people, Prince Chang and his allies are extremely outnumbered.

‘Kingdom’ Season 3 Cast Predictions: Who Could Return?

Unfortunately, there were plenty of demises by the end of season 2. Based on where season 2 ended, only the following cast members are likely to return.

Ju Ji-Hoon is likely coming back as Crown Prince Chang, Bae Doo-Na as Seo-Bi,

Kim Sung-Kyu as Young-Shin, Jun Suk-Ho as Jo Beom-Pal, and Ahn Eun Jin as Moo Young’s Wife.

We are also expecting to see Jun Ji Hyun after she was introduced in the final moments of season 2.
