‘Julie and the Phantoms’ was a smash hit both for the young and adult Netflix subscribers. The musical comedy series was released on September 10, 2020, and fans continue to patiently wait for a new season. ‘Julie and the Phantoms’ is based on the Brazilian series 'Julie e os Fantasmas' and follows Julie Molina, a teenager who can see the ghosts of three bandmates. Julie helps the Phantoms fulfill their dreams of becoming a successful band, something they weren't able to do after their untimely death more than two decades ago. The show's ending perfectly sets up the series for another season. Let's find out if 'Julie and the Phantoms' will return for season 2.

Has ‘Julie and the Phantoms’ Been Renewed For Season 2?

Renewal Status: Canceled

‘Julie and the Phantoms’ was released on Netflix on September 10, 2020. Even before Netflix announced its verdict, Producer Kenny Ortega revealed that they have already started working on season 2 while waiting for renewal. “We’re now developing, we’re now writing [season 2], we’re now moving forward,” Ortega said in an interview with SunsetDrive Podcast, adding he has “high hopes.

Sadly, those hopes were cut short. Fans and creators waited for months to hear back from Netflix. In December 2021, more than a year after its release, Netflix officially canceled ‘Julie and the Phantoms’ after just one season.

Ortega took to Instagram to share the devastating news.

“Our [Julie and the Phantoms] family want to send our love and endless thanks to our Fantoms all over the world for the tremendous outpouring of love and support you have shown us since our premiere,” Ortega writes. “We learned this week that Netflix will not be picking us up for another season. Although our hearts are saddened, we move on with such pride for what we accomplished as a team and the family we built while creating Julie.”

He added:

“We hope you will continue to follow us as we move forward with our work and careers. Happy Holidays to you all. Wishing you good health, love, and #perfectharmony in all you pursue! Kenny, the Cast, Writers, Producers, Creatives, BC Crew, and our devoted [Netflix[ Team!”

What Could've Been The Plot Of 'Julie and the Phantoms' Season 2?

In the first season, we saw Julie help Luke, Alex, and Reggie discover that music has the power to make them visible to other people. While continuing to navigate the power of music to make them real, the Phantoms ran into supernatural trouble with Caleb. Caleb gives them a countdown, threatening to banish their existence once the time is up. By the end of the first season, the Phantoms managed to overcome their doom, and they are finally able to touch each other and interact with the real world.

For season 2, Ortega teased that we will find out whether the Phantoms are ghosts or not.

"That gets answered very early on in the next season,” Ortega said during an interview with DigitalSpy,

The Phantoms may have overcome Caleb's predictions, but he is still not finished with them. Caleb has found his new ace. He uses Julie's old crush, Nick, to get closer to her.

Aside from dealing with Caleb, the new season is also expected to follow Julie's journey as she uses music to deal with her grief after losing her mom.

The first season also seemed to hint that Julie's mother might hold the explanation for why only Julie can see the Phantoms and others can't.

Meanwhile, the Phantom's former bandmate, who is still alive, saw their performance in a video. He recognizes them, but it is too bad that he will never get to meet him since the show was cut short.
