Johnny Depp Used His Own Money To Protect 500 'Pirates Of The Caribbean' Crew Members

In 2010, the actor was concerned about staff working in cold, rainy conditions at Pinewood Studios in Iver Heath.

Johnny Depp reportedly spent £40,000 of his own money on coats for crew members working on the set of Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides. Back in 2010, the crew had to work in cold, rainy conditions at Pinewood Studios in Iver Heath. The fourth Pirates of the Caribbean movie at Pinewood Studios had been hit by wet weather and chilly winds, so the Captain Jack Sparrow actor was concerned and decided to pitch in.

The now-58-year-old actor spent his own money to ensure that all 500 crew members had warm, waterproof coats. As per LADBible, a crew member told The Sun, "Johnny paid out of his own pocket for all 500 of us to have a nice warm waterproof. It's a great morale boost and another example of why he is one of the nicest people in Hollywood."

Kevin McNally, who played Mr. Gibbs, Captain Jack's best crewmate across the five films in the Disney franchise, recently confirmed that this story was indeed true during an interview with Daily Express. The 65-year-old actor shared, "He bought the entire crew coats, the cast didn't see any coats. I think he didn't want to spoil us. He also did get the entire crew some very nice wallets imprinted with the tattoo he has on his arm." The real tattoo is a sparrow on the actor's forearm after his character's namesake

As we previously reported, the actor still has many supporters despite the few controversial years. He has been in the spotlight since his ex-wife Amber Heard's allegations of domestic abuse. He also launched a libel case against a British tabloid that called him a 'wife-beater.' Depp eventually lost that case and, despite launching an appeal, was denied the right to have the case heard again in court. It's been a difficult time for the actor, not just in his personal life, but his career has also taken a hit. Depp had also been asked to resign from his role as Grindelwald in Fantastic Beasts. He also stepped down from playing one of his most iconic roles, that of Captain Jack Sparrow in the Pirates franchise.

Fans, however, wish to see him again as the iconic character. McNally told the Daily Express that he feels Depp should be recast. "I've never seen a hint of any dark side to Johnny. I see a great humanitarian and a beautiful human being. I don't see any impediment for him coming back and playing Jack Sparrow. I think there was a general feeling that without Jack, there is no Pirates franchise. And there's probably a lot of truth in that. But now there have been questions about that, certainly why not have other Pirate films and certainly then why not have Jack back or Jack playing a different part. I mean, I was musing about this the other day, and you can easily think of stories in which maybe somebody is looking for Jack and come to Mr. Gibbs and say, 'How would I find Jack?' And so have a whole bunch of people on a trek to find the legendary Jack Sparrow. You can certainly keep those names alive, even in a film that doesn't necessarily contain the [original] characters too much."
