The third John Wick movie turned out to be even more successful than expected as it managed to surpass the collection of 'Avengers:Endgame'.
It is impossible for any movie to dominate the box office continuously, no matter how successful the movie is. Even when E.T. came out, it dominated the box office for sixteen straight weeks, but it was eventually defeated by another one. After racing with 'Detective Pikachu' last weekend, Avengers: Endgame came into this weekend a bit beaten up, and John Wick 3 took full advantage where the movie topped with $57 million, which is almost double that of 'Endgame'.
The legend of the 'John Wick' franchise only grew this weekend. Lionsgate only had two movies open over $30 million and another five open over $25 million since 2016. Since the release of 'Wonder', they have not had a movie that has grossed $100 million and only had one movie gross a total higher than what 'John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum' made this weekend.
The previous two installments of the movie definitely had nice little runs at the box office, but the third one doubled the weekend opening of round two, as reported by Box Office Mojo. Following the ending of the third movie, there is definitely a sign that the franchise is going in the right direction. If there is going to be a Chapter 4 or not is not known yet but there's still the spinoff rolling forward over at Starz and it's hard to imagine that Hollywood will give up such an opportunity.
Having said that, 'Avengers: Endgame' also deserves a lot of recognition as it was an amazing movie. Even though the movie has not won a historically significant number of weekends, it'll go down as one of the highest grossing movies of all-time. The next question here is where will MCU go from here and what the new normal as far as box office grosses might be.
'Detective Pikachu' also had a solid second-weekend opening and fans are already speculating on what Pokemon movies they'd like to see next, and it now seems certain that the audience and fans will get to see another movie with a sizeable budget in the near future, which is the entire goal of trying to launch a franchise.
