Japan Sinks: 2020 Season 2: Everything We Know So Far

Japan Sinks: 2020 takes place after the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. But when a huge earthquake hits Japan, things swiftly go out of control as buildings and whole cities are turned to rubble. The whole Japanese archipelago also starts to sink, which makes the chaos even worse and makes it increasingly difficult to get out. Ayumu and Gou Mutou, two young brothers, are stuck in the thick of events as they strive to stay alive and save their family and friends.

Japan Sinks: 2020 is based on the book Nippon Chinbotsu by famed Japanese science fiction writer Sakyo Komatsu, which came out in 1973. It shows the aftermath of a disaster in a way that is both terrifying and worryingly realistic. The book has been made into a movie before. The movie Tidal Wave came out in 1973, and TBS and Toho embarked on a TV drama version in 1974. The novel has been relevant for a long time, as shown by the 2006 remake called Sinking of Japan. This suggests that there is still more that can be done with the idea.

The book did get a sequel called Nihon chinbotsu dai ni bu, which means “Japan Sinks: Chapter 2.” It might not be as well known as the first one, but it could be used as the basis for a second season of the show. Netflix could always hire a fresh writer to put their own take on the idea. This idea could be very different from both the first book and the second book. Disaster movies have always been popular and have a lot of material to work with. But can we expect more?

Will Japan Sinks: 2020 Return With Season 2?

Netflix hasn’t stated anything regarding a second season yet, and they haven’t said the show is over either. We will just have to wait for an announcement. But Japan Sinks: 2020’s success will certainly make Netflix think about making more disaster movies in the future. So even if Japan Sinks: 2020 doesn’t go on, we’ll probably see a lot more big events on Netflix in the future.
