James Wan, the creator of 'The Conjuring' Universe, is back with some "genre-bending" horror film. Here are all the latest updates you need to know.
James Wan, the brilliant co-creator of the 'Saw' and 'Insidious' franchise and the creator of 'The Conjuring' Universe, is back with another horror flick.
The upcoming film is based on an original story written by Wan, together with Ingrid Bisu Akela Cooper. James Wan is directing the movie. He will also serve as a co-producer along with Michael Clear.
'Malignant' will be coming both to the big and home screens. Most of the film's details are kept under the rug, but we already have few key pieces of information about the horror movie.
Here is everything we know about 'Malignant' so far.
'Malignant' currently has a release date of September 10, 2021. The film will be available in theaters and HBO Max, produced by Warner Bros. Pictures under the New Line Cinema banner.
'Malignant' is among those films that are supposed to release in 2020 but got moved due to the pandemic. It was originally scheduled to release in theaters on August 14, 2020. The film completed principal photography in December 2019. In December 2020, HBO announced that Malignant will be among a slew of films that will also be coming to HBO Max on the same date of their theatrical release. It is a strategy to maximize viewership when some theaters still can not operate in full capacity.
In January 2021, James Wan shared some teaser art of the film, which he describes as his “little horror-thriller.”
Much of the plot remains unknown as of this writing. All we know for now is that one, it's not a superhero film, and two, it's an original story.
"It's definitely not a superhero film. Malignant is an original thriller not based off any existing IP," Wan said in 2019, clarifying that the film is not based on his 2011 graphic novel Malignant Man.
'Malignant' received an R rating from the Motion Picture Association of America earlier this month for "strong horror violence and gruesome images, and for language."
So far, the only sneak peek we have of 'Malignant' is through the above 2021 HBO teaser announcing a same-day premiere. In that teaser, we see Annabelle Wallis lying on her side as a creepy figure slowly emerges behind her.
The film's release date is fast approaching. So, we are expecting to know more about the film's plot in the upcoming weeks.
We will update this article once more information is available.
Much like the film's plot, James Wan has kept most of the character details secret too.
We know that Annabelle Wallis will be starring in the lead role. Wallis and Wan previously worked together on 'Annabelle,' the spin-off of 'The Conjuring' that served as a prequel to the 2013 horror film. The actress has some pretty big words to describe their newest collaboration.
“I think we have something very special,” Wallis said about 'Malignant' in an interview via The Playlist. “I think it’s genre-bending. I think it’s so brave. It’s so original. I just haven’t read anything like it. And James Wan, we worked together on ‘Annabelle,’ so he was like, ‘I wrote this part for you, Annabelle. Let’s collaborate."
Joining Annabelle are stars Jake Abel (Supernatural), George Young, Jacqueline McKenzie, Mckenna Grace (Designated Survivor), Maddie Hasson (Twisted), and Michole Briana White.
We are still waiting for Warner Brothers to release the official trailer for 'Malignant.' The trailer will likely release in the upcoming weeks. We will make sure to update this space once the trailer is already available. Feel free to check back on this link from time to time.
