How 7 Actors Completely Transformed Their Appearance For A Role

They look so different!

It sure takes a whole lot of effort to get an actor to look like a completely different person. Whether it's an incredibly talented make-up crew or the actors themselves shedding a lot of weight or gaining tons, we got to hand it to the incredible determination and skill it takes to do so. These special roles must have been challenging either physically or mentally or both! Let's have a look at some drastic transformations we've seen of actors on screen. Brightside has put together a full list here.

1. Christian Bale in The Machinist

Bale's commitment is quite something else! Bale lost an incredible amount of weight and looked almost unrecognizable as he played a man suffering from insomnia who was tormented by his past.

2. Taryn Manning in Orange Is the New Black

Tiffany “Pennsatucky” Doggett in Orange Is the New Black was one of the main antagonists in the first season of the series and Manning's look was so different from real life. She was featured in all seven seasons of OITNB, which won three SAG Awards for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series, reports Deadline.

3. Rooney Mara in The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo

Mara was cast as the lead in David Fincher’s film adaptation of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo in 2010. Playing tattooed hacker Lisbeth Salander, Mara's look was a lot edgier than how she carries herself off-screen.

4. Jared Leto in Mr. Nobody

In the 2009 science-fiction drama, Leto plays Nemo, a 118-year-old man who is the last of the mortals on Earth. Leto is known for his dedication to his roles and embodies the character both mentally and physically. From being the Joker in Suicide Squad to a trans-woman from The Dallas Buyers Club, we know he has quite the range.

5. Naomi Grossman in American Horror Story: Freak Show

Now, this is a real transformation! Grossman looks nothing like her character on American Horror Story: Freak Show. To play Pepper, the actress had to spend many hours with makeup artists and even get several prostheses placed for the role.

6. Ryan Gosling in Blue Valentine

While Ryan Gosling's makeover towards the end of the film, isn't as drastic as the others in the list, somehow he still does manage to look unrecognizable. Blue Valentine sees its characters change with time, so viewers get to see a working-class, older, fatter, and half bald version of Gosling.

7. Chris Hemsworth in Avengers: Endgame

The God of Thunder became a meme for his transformation from a celestial being to someone who liked to eat a lot and felt uninspired by life. Hemsworth is pretty dedicated when it comes to his workouts so fans were shocked to see the actor look so different. But it seems he was wearing a “fat suit” that weighed approximately 60 to 70 pounds for the role.
