Will we see a continuation of Kyoko Hori and Izumi Miyamura's love story?
'Horimiya' took the world by storm when it premiered early this year. Fans fell in love with the cute love story between two opposing high school students.
The anime series is based on a manga series written and illustrated by Hiroki Adachi, under the pseudonym Hero.
It follows the story of a popular girl and a nerdy guy who have very different lives outside school. They promised to keep each other's secrets hidden, and along the way, fell in love.
The anime series had a definitive and happy ending, but fans are hoping to see a continuation of their romantic story. So is 'Horimiya' season 2 happening? Here is what we know.
The anime is still not renewed for season 2 and might have a hard time returning. The first season wrapped up the plot for the series. There were no cliffhangers nor secrets left to be unveiled. The well-rounded ending could mean that the show might no longer return for season 2 simply because there is no more story left to tell.
Aside from that, the anime adaptation also caught up with the plot from the manga series. There is no more source material for a new season after the manga concluded with the publication of chapter 122 in March 2021.
The final episode was based on the last chapter of the manga series, featuring the graduation day of Katagiri Senior High School students.
With no more source material to adapt, Horimiya season 2 might no longer happen anymore.
We already know that 'Horimiya' might no longer return for season 2. However, the show is not officially canceled either, so there is still a very slim chance for season 2 to come into fruition.
The first season premiered on January 10, 2021, and ran for 13 episodes before ending on April 4, 2021. If the show will get renewed for season 2, the earliest possible release date, for now, would be early 2022 or 2023.
The story of 'Horimiya' centers around a beautiful and popular Kyoko Hori and the introverted and shy guy Izumi Miyamura. The two went to the same high school, but their social status and attitude are poles apart. However, their personalities at school are consciously curated to hide who they truly are outside the four walls of the academic institution. The nerdy Izumi leads a more adventurous life and dresses up in punk style, complete with earrings and tattoos when he is outside. Meanwhile, Kyoko dresses down and takes care of her younger brother Souta.
The two crosses path outside school, and after discovering each other's secrets, they vowed to conceal the truths from their classmates at school. As the story progresses, the two eventually developed feelings for each other. Towards the end, they finally confess their love, and their friends accepted and supported their relationship. In the last episode of the series, the two were seen graduating from high school.
If the show gets renewed for season 2, we are likely seeing a continuation of Kyoko and Izumi's relationship. The first season has already exhausted the source material. So, the anime will have to come up with a new story should they want to continue the series.
The future of the anime remains in the dark as of this writing. While we continue to remain hopeful, we will leave you with the season 1 trailer to enjoy. Just in case you haven't watched the anime yet, 'Horimiya' is available on Hulu, Netflix (only in Japan), and Funimation (USA).
