Disney+ has officially announced that Hocus Pocus 2 is happening and put years of rumors to rest. The Hocus Pocus sequel is based on the 1993 film, which is now a cult classic. The movie featured Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Kathy Najimy, who played the roles of the famous Salem witches. The storyline followed the three Sandersen sisters who were awoken in the 20th century by a group of kids in Salem, Massachusetts. While the original film didn't do too well at the box office and failed to win over critics, it has garnered a cult following over the years. The sequel film is set to be directed by Adam Shankman.
Here's all you need to know.
Najimy recently revealed that she, along with her fellow costars, spoke on the phone about the upcoming movie's script. Now they're just waiting for production details. The film is still in the early stages of pre-production. Speaking to SiriusXM's The Jess Cagle Show (via Comicbook.com), Najimy said, "Sarah [Jessica Parker] and Bette [Midler] and I had like a couple of weeks on the phone talking about the script, and that was really fun, obviously."

She continued, "Bette Midler, as Jess knows, was a huge, huge inspiration for my whole entire life. Like half of me is me because of Bette Midler, half of me is me because of my mom, Gloria Steinem, and Bette Midler. So we talked a lot about notes, and if we did now, it's just, and we all have said in a perfect world, yes. Now it's just location, times and dates and how long and all that. So it's just, it's those things. So, you know, I can't really give a yay or nay either way." There is no set date for the film's sequel yet. According to Screen Rant, Hocus Pocus 2 will likely start filming in late 2021. It seems the film might be lined up for a Halloween 2022 release on Disney+.
There isn't much information on the new film's storyline. Midler, in an interview with PEOPLE, previously said as per Yahoo News, "They presented us with an outline, and after we picked ourselves up off the floor because it's been 27 years, we looked at it and I think all of us agreed that it was pretty great." Midler also said that she hoped that the sequel would include the elements that made the original movie a hit with fans.
She said, "We're trying to see who's available and who's still out there and still working and who can come back. Because, a lot of the success of what we did on that picture had to do with the team that was surrounded, had to do with the team that they assembled to make that picture, the people who did the flying and the rigging, the people who did the green screens, the people who did the ... I don't think they called it the green screen in those days. The people who did the hair and makeup, which were all exemplary, the costumers, and the special effects people."
Again, not much has been revealed. All we know is that the Sanderson sisters are coming back! Midler, who played Winnie Sanderson in the original, confirmed that she, along with co-stars Sarah Jessica Parker (Sarah Sanderson) and Kathy Najimy (Mary Sanderson) will be returning as the witches for the second Hocus Pocus movie. Midler told Fox 5 New York, "They want to make a movie, they've asked us if we were interested and of course all of us said yes. I'm game, I'm totally game." As for the rest of the cast, we'll just have to wait and see!
