‘High School DxD’ Season 5: Everything We Know So Far

Animes have become everyone’s favorite as the storylines are incredibly vast. ‘High School DxD’ is another anime that is based on a Japanese manga series, and it has been adapted into several successful anime series and spin-offs since 2012. Not to mention, ‘High School DxD’ has a huge fan base who are now waiting for the fifth season. Can fans expect Season 5 of ‘High School DxD’ to take forward the story from the arc of Hero Oppai Dragon from the manga. Here is everything we know so far about the fifth installment.

Will ‘High School DxD’ Return With Season 5 Premiere?

Passione has not yet made any official announcements on High School DxD Season 5. It was rumored that the COVID-19 Pandemic stopped the production of the fifth season and it hasn’t gotten back into production since then. It’s highly possible that the time elapses has caused the show to lose steam making it a risky investment for the studio to continue the series.

The fourth season of High School DxD premiered on April 17, 2018, and ended on July 3, 2018. However, there isn’t any news about the fifth season or related developments. However, the light novel author, Ichieie Ishibumi, reportedly confirmed that season 5 is on the way and encouraged fans to continue buying the light novel series. If fans continue buying the light novels, it may hasten the production of the anime.

However, we have heard some rumors that High School DxD’s production was stopped due to the COVID-19 pandemic and never really got back off the ground since then. Passione, the animation studio, has been occupied with various other anime projects, which could be a factor in the scheduling challenges they face. Notably, some of these projects were developed between 2020 and 2021, weakening the argument that the COVID-19 pandemic solely caused the delay of “High School DxD” Season 5.

The voice actors from “High School DxD,” have also been quite busy lately. For instance, Jamie Marchi, the voice actress for Rias, lent her voice to a character in “That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime,” a prominent isekai anime. The involvement of voice talent in such high-profile projects could be taking precedence over their roles in “High School DxD.”

The delay in releasing a new season of “High School DxD” seems to be more about the waning momentum of the series rather than other external factors. With the considerable time elapsed since the last season, it’s becoming less likely that a new season will maintain the same impact as its predecessors. Therefore, it’s more probable that either Passione or another studio might opt for a complete reboot of the anime, aligning more closely with the source novels, rather than continuing the series in its existing format.

Season 4, when aired, showed the Hero Oppai Dragon story arc from the manga in the beginning, covering Volumes 9 and 10. Therefore, we can base our expectation on the fact that there is content for season 5, and it is expected to continue the story arc and adapt Volumes 11 and 12. However, Passion Studio is yet to comment on it.

We will keep this article updated as new information emerges.

Why Is It Taking So Long For ‘High School DxD’ Season 5 To Come?

It is being said that the studio responsible for the production of the previous four seasons will no longer be a part of the anime show in any capacity. This was the main reason for the long break between the fourth and current seasons. Because of this, nobody talked about anything further as they wanted to be sure about everything else before making any comments. The shift of studios happened because those responsible for the show wanted to follow the graphic novels, which are based much more closely than the previous studio had been. With the former four stories, the studio started drifting away in the terms of the story in the manga and basically started creating or, rather say its own story. The situation becomes a little complex here as both the manga and the anime series are equally loved by the fans and have a huge fan base. Many fans who follow the show and read the manga have complained that it is like being exposed to two completely different things, which is why the decision was made to change the production company.

What Is ‘High School DxD’ All About?

The story revolves around Kuoh Academy or Kuō Gakuen, an old girls’ school before becoming a co-ed institution. But, the school has a secret hidden inside it that no one knows of—that it is the home of many fallen angels, both good and bad. The main character of the show is Issei Hyoudou.

Issei happens to be a promiscuous guy who dreams of having his own Harem one day and wants to date some of the beautiful girls in his school. He couldn’t believe his fate when a beautiful girl named Yuuma Amano asked him out on a date. However, little did he know that Yuma is none other than a fallen angel called Raynare and he gets stabbed to death by her. Issei, however, gets a second chance at life when a beautiful senior, Rias Gremory, brings him back to life. But, giving Issei his life back, Rias had her own intentions as she was a top-notch devil. She makes Issei her servant and forces him to work for the school’s Occult Research Club.

Since Issei got a second life, he needs to learn how to fight and train himself to survive in a world of angels and devils. The show moves forward, and eventually, it becomes clear that there is something wrong with the Occult Research Club’s Knight, Yuuto Kiba, who is composed and cautious most of the time. Issei finds out the reason behind Kiba’s unusual behavior is because of his dark and bloody past, where he was subjected to a brutal experiment. As Issei tries to learn more about the mystery and secret, an old enemy returns with the new ones, and he is left with his comrades to fight them back.

Fans see later in the show that Issei’s and his comrade’s weaknesses are exposed by their sworn enemies, resulting in making Rias realizing that her team is immature and has been acting like one for so long. Therefore, she, along with Azazel, led the members of the Occult Research into a high-intensity training regime in the Underworld to prepare them for whatever challenges await. When the team matures, they have to face none other than Loki, the evil God of Mischief in Norse mythology, and winning against him is going to be the toughest thing to do.
