The sequel that has been set in motion is not in the form of a follow-up film, like we expected, but is actually going to be a novel.
Tim Burton's The Nightmare Before Christmas is an iconic film that has become a staple during the festive season. The stop-motion animation follows the story of Jack Skellington, the King of Halloween Town, who happens to stumble upon Christmas Town and becomes obsessed with celebrating the holiday. But things take a turn for the worse when Jack ends up abducting Santa to make the celebration a success, even as the townspeople are resistant to the idea.
The film came out in 1993 and has achieved cult classic status since. The success of the film prompted Disney to think of a sequel, but Burton put an end to it when he said, "I was always very protective of [Nightmare], not to do sequels or things of that kind. You know, Jack visits Thanksgiving world or other kinds of things, just because I felt the movie had a purity to it and the people that like it."
But after 28 years, we are indeed getting a much-awaited sequel, and here's everything you need to know about it.
There has been talk about trying to make the sequel happen in the same stop-motion format, and Chris Sarandon even expressing his wish to reprise his role. But the sequel that has been set in motion is not in the form of a follow-up film, like we expected, but is actually going to be a novel.
Disney Publishing has announced that it's taking a trip back to Halloween Town after the events of The Nightmare Before Christmas film. This story will be explored in the YA novel following Sally, Jack's love interest in the film, as the protagonist. The novel will be penned by Shea Ernshaw (The Wicked Deep, Winterwood). She took to Instagram earlier this year to make the announcement.
"I’m so happy to finally reveal the title for the Sally book!" Ernshaw wrote in the post revealing the title: Long Live The Pumpkin Queen. "There was a lot of back and forth about this title (lots of people involved at Disney + beyond to ensure the exact right title for this story!)" she said, adding, "We don’t have a final cover quite yet, but hoping to share it later this year!"
As per the author's website, this will be Sally's story: "After falling in love with Jack Skellington and marrying him atop Spiral Hill, Sally must grapple with her new title as the Pumpkin Queen of Halloween Town. When she happens upon a new doorway near the grove of holiday trees, she inadvertently sets loose a villain who could ruin Halloween Town forever. Now, Sally must venture to the other six holidays on a quest to save Jack and all of Halloween Town, a perilous journey that will lead her to unearth worlds she never imagined, learn the truth about her own past, and decide what this discovery means for her future."
Ernshaw has stated that the book will be available on July 5th, 2022. The book is up for pre-order with Disney Books as well.
