Harry Styles Might Play The Role Of Prince Eric In The Live-Action Remake Of 'The Little Mermaid'

Former One Direction Heartthrob Harry Styles is reportedly in talks with the studio where he might play the role of Prince Eric.

This is just in! The former heartthrob of 'One Direction' band, Harry Styles is in talks to play the role of Prince Eric in Disney's live-action remake of 'The Little Mermaid'. Even though he lost out on the role to play Elvis in a Baz Luhrmann biopic on the King, but the singer seems to have landed a part in “Chicago” director Rob Marshall’s live-action version of “The Little Mermaid” instead.

The former singer of One Direction is said to be an early favorite and is currently in discussions with the studio. If this is finalized, Styles will star alongside the R&B singer Halle Bailey who will play Ariel and Melissa McCarthy who is rumored to take on the role of Ursula. Awkafina of 'Crazy Rich Asians' fame and Jacob Tremblay are also in talks to star in the live-action remake.

'The Little Mermaid' is the latest attempt by the Mouse House to update a much-loved animated classic. The movie will be directed by Rob Marshall who recently took on Mary Poppins Returns for the studio. The songs from the original movie will feature but the original composer, Alan Menken, will also create new song numbers with help from Lin-Manuel Miranda.

In the original movie, the character of Eric falls in love with the mermaid Ariel but performed no songs. But, when the movie was taken as a Broadway musical, he was given two songs to perform on. Styles has previously appeared in Christopher Nolan's 'Dunkirk' and was also shortlisted to play the role of Elvis in his upcoming biopic on the King.

But he lost the role to Austin Butler. Back in March, Prince Eric trended on Twitter after a user suggested that Styles would make the perfect choice for the character. This live-action remake by Disney is going to follow the footsteps of a long list of most successful Disney remakes. This year, Guy Ritchie’s 'Aladdin' made $961m worldwide while Jon Favreau’s The Lion King is also predicted to see similar success as 'Aladdin'.

It is predicted that 'The Lion King' will take home as much as $450m globally in its first weekend, but it also needs to keep in mind that Tim Burton’s Dumbo which stumbled with a $352m worldwide tally earlier this year has faced some major disappointment. Later this year, the audience will see a sequel to Maleficent starring Angelina Jolie, and next year, we are going to see a live-action remake of 'Mulan'.
