Those who have already watched the Endgame would know that all of the members of the Guardians of the Galaxy are back from the dead, and Gamora is the missing link.
The eyes were locked on the return of Star-Lord and co in 'Guardians of the Galaxy' Vol 2, and it was known by then that its success is soon going to result in the third installment. Blame it on the writer/director, James Gunn, who did not let fans calm down by dropping several hints about what might happen in Marvel Studios Phase Four's Guardians sequel, famously known as 'Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3'. However, unfortunately, he was fired by Disney in July 2018. Before you panic, let's throw some light on what exactly happened, and everything else that we know about the third sequel!
The reason behind Gunn getting fired was followed by a slew of ill-judged old tweets resurfacing. Due to which, Gunn had to apologize and he'd quit the social media platform then. However, surprisingly, he made the jump to comic-book movie rivals DC by signing up to write and direct 'The Suicide Squad'. On the other hand, Marvel had to stall the project and then put it on hold. Things were messy and uncertain for Star-Lord and his crew.
Surprisingly, Gunn was rehired by the studio. He had given his prior commitment to 'Suicide Squad', but he will also be working for the 'Guardians Of The Galaxy' Vol 3. The third installment is back in the game and the production is expected to start as soon as Gunn finishes DC's antiheroes film. "His personality, the tone of those movies, I can only describe as James' personality," Nebula actress Karen Gillan told Marc Malkin on The Big Ticket podcast. "It's his sense of humor, his writing, his taste in music. These characters are extensions of him. It's a really personal project for him. It definitely wouldn't have been the same version of Guardians [without him]."
The third installment of 'Guardians Of The Galaxy' holds a special place in James Gunn's heart as he described on Twitter that the movie contains 'every bit' of his heart. Fans can be certain about the fact that Rocket is key to the Guardians 3 story. According to Deadline, James Gunn explained how important was it for him to complete Rocket's arc. He said, "What was saddest for me when I thought [Guardians 3] was gone—and anybody at Marvel can tell you—it’s this very strange and attached relationship to Rocket. Rocket is me, he really is, even if that sounds narcissistic. Groot is like my dog. I love Groot in a completely different way. I relate to Rocket and I feel compassion for Rocket, but I also feel like his story has not been completed. He has an arc that started in the first movie, continued into the second and goes through Infinity War and Endgame, and then I was set to really finish that arc in Guardians 3. That was a big loss to me—not being able to finish that story—though I was comforted by the fact that they were still planning to use my script."
Vol. 3 will also have Endgame's development. Those who have already watched the Endgame would know that all of the members of the Guardians of the Galaxy are back from the dead, and Gamora is the missing link. The ending of Avengers: Endgame is definitely going to have some major outcomes which will be shown in Vol 3 that might also include a potential new team member in Thor.
Another plot of the story for the third installment could be a couple of keys that were left in Vol 2 for fans to ponder. For example, Ayesha- the gold-skinned leader of the Sovereign race, who is vengeful and wants to defeat the Guardians after they double-crossed her. Fans could see from the mid-credits scene where she brings to a life a powerful new artificial being named Adam, with whom she is planning to destroy the Guardians. The character of Adam Warlock is considerably one of the most powerful characters of Marvel, and not everyone or anyone would want to stand against him. Gunn made it pretty clear in his original script of Vol 2 that Warlock was there in the second installment but was cut due to time. Therefore, fans can expect him to be there in the third installment.
The fact that Gamora was thrown off the cliff and that other Guardians were destroyed in 'Infinity War', Marvel has found its way to bring them back for Vol 3. The expected cast to return includes- Chris Pratt (Star-Lord), Zoe Saldana (Gamora), Dave Bautista (Drax), Vin Diesel (Groot), Bradley Cooper (Rocket), Karen Gillan (Nebula), Sean Gunn (Kraglin) and Pom Klementieff (Mantis). Others who we can expect to see in Vol 3 could be Yondu's protege, Kraglin, who is donning his mentor's iconic telekinetic arrow and control-fin, as well as the 'original Guardians' that includes, Sylvester Stallone's Stakar Ogord, Ving Rhames' Charlie-27 and Michelle Yeoh's Aleta Ogord.
@JamesGunn is GOTGV3 going to be a prequel to Infinity wars because V2 was set in 2014?— Ian's Existenz (@ZeroExistenz) May 1, 2017
No. Vol. 3 will take place AFTER Avengers 3 & 4. https://t.co/5QCiH5fU55— James Gunn (@JamesGunn) May 2, 2017
It is hard to be precise about the release date as Disney hasn't confirmed anything officially yet, even though it was reported previously that the movie might release in late 2021. We can clearly hope to see the movie in progress only when Gunn's 'Suicide Squash' is scheduled.
