The pair is set to adapt the highly-acclaimed Chinese sci-fi novel into a series for Netflix.
'Game of Thrones' creators are currently brewing another masterpiece on Netflix.
David Benioff and D.B. Weiss have reportedly signed a $200 million development deal with the giant streaming platform last year.
Benioff and Weiss will be working on a new live-action series based on Chinese author Liu Cixin’s science fiction novel The Three-Body Problem.
The Three-Body Problem is a highly-acclaimed novel and is just the first part of the Remembrance of Earth's Past trilogy. It won the 2015 Hugo Award for best science-fiction or fantasy novel, with Cixin as the first Asian winner.
The book tells the story of the human's first contact with an alien civilization.
Screenplay writer Alexander Woo will help adapt the book and its two sequels, The Dark Forest and Death’s End, into a series.
Big names are attached to the project with Star Wars: The Last Jedi’s Rian Johnson, Brad Pitt, and Rosamund Pike joining the team as executive producers.
Ken Liu will serve as the English language writer while author Cixin will be a consulting producer.
In a statement published via Polygon, Benioff and Weiss said:
"Liu Cixin’s trilogy is the most ambitious science-fiction series we’ve read, taking readers on a journey from the 1960s until the end of time, from life on our pale blue dot to the distant fringes of the universe. We look forward to spending the next years of our lives, bringing this to life for audiences around the world."
On the other hand, Cixin said he's honored and excited to bring his masterpiece to the rest of the world through Netflix.
"I set out to tell a story that transcends time and the confines of nations, cultures, and races, one that compels us to consider the fate of humankind as a whole. It is a great honor as an author to see this unique sci-fi concept travel and gain fandom across the globe, and I am excited for new and existing fans all over the world to discover the story on Netflix," Cixin said.
Netflix is yet to announce the release date for The Three-Body Problem. We are also still waiting for casting details for the series.
While the novel received high praise, some are concerned that the concept is impossible to adapt on screen.
Unlike Game of Thrones, the Three-Body Problem is more focused on ideas than characters. This is because Cixin has a different inspiration when writing the novels.
“I did not begin writing for love of literature,” Cixin tells The New Yorker. “I did so for love of science.”
However, Benioff and Weiss have already proven their skills with A Song of Ice and Fire, another supposedly unfilmable scene too, which turned out just fine.
We're excited how the pair would bring Three-Body Problem to life for the rest of the world to see.
