Reservation Dogs, the FX series, has been renewed for a third season right ahead of the show’s Season 2 finale on September 28. The new season is expected to be released in 2023 exclusively on Hulu, reported Variety.

"Reservation Dogs continues its remarkable run with critics, fans, and awards all recognizing the singular brilliance of the series created by Sterlin Harjo and Taika Waititi,” said Nick Grad, president of original programming for FX. “FX is proud to join with our partners at Hulu to order a third season featuring the amazing cast and all of the artists who deliver one of the most original, engaging, and funny shows on television.” Season 3 will air next year exclusively on Hulu and, if the early August release dates for the previous two seasons are any indication, we can expect a similar time frame in 2023.

Per FX, the half-hour comedy series follows the exploits of "four Indigenous teenagers in rural Oklahoma who steal, rob and save in order to get to the exotic, mysterious and faraway land of California. The show’s first-of-its-kind Indigenous creative team invites audiences into a surprisingly familiar and funny world."

After the death of the fifth member of the Reservation Dogs, the crew took to stealing, scheming, and saving in order to vicariously fulfill his dream of reaching California. But, after a promising start to their criminal endeavors, including the legendary heist of a Flaming Flamers chips truck, swiping some old lady’s weed edibles, and some low-grade grand theft auto, the plan went bust. The gang disbanded, with everyone trying to forge their own paths.

“I couldn’t be more proud of this show that I created with my friend Taika Waititi,” series co-creator Sterlin Harjo also said of the renewal. “It was born out of a conversation in Taika’s kitchen and has now made its way into the lives of people across the world. The love for season 2 has been outstanding. Thank you to FX for ordering season 3, excited to bring you more laughter and love from the Rez. Ahoooo!” Harjo and Waititi created the series and serve as executive producers alongside Garret Basch. Additionally, Harjo also serves as showrunner and director.

The series has an extraordinary cast. The show stars D'PHaraoh Woon-A-Tai, Devery Jacobs, Paulina Alexis, and Lane Factor. Also featured in supporting roles are Elva Guerra, Sarah Podemski, Zahn McClarnon, and Dallas Goldtooth.

"You can't go to Hollywood to cast a show like this," Harjo has said of casting the series, via NPR. "[Native actors usually] get to play, like, a dead Indian outside of a teepee every five to 10 years, you know? So there's not a big pool of Native actors in L.A. So we went to the communities, and shout out to Angelique Midthunder, who was our casting director. She went in and we went to different communities and we also had tapes sent to us from communities, but it was important that they were from an Indigenous community."

Harjo added, "It wasn't unnecessarily unorthodox for me, because I've been making these films for so long, and I know that there's talent out there. There's just not opportunities for Native actors to even know that there's an opportunity to be in a movie."
