Tohru and the Sohma's journey continues to season 3.
Fruits Basket has been one of the reasons anime lovers look forward to summer.
The fantastic reboot by TMS Entertainment and Funimation first aired in 2019 and has since gained more popularity than the first anime series that aired back in 2001.
Fruits Basket has gripped the audience with its intricate plot laced with overwhelming emotions that's too powerful to ignore.
After an emotional and jaw-dropping revelation in season 2, let us find out what's next for the anime series.
We are delighted to tell you that Fruits Basket has been renewed for season 3 by TMS Entertainment.
Fans didn't wait too long to get the confirmation. The renewal announcement came just an hour after the season 2 finale, which aired on September 21, 2020. Albeit, the renewal is not that surprising considering the shows' impressive records and the original plans for the reboot.
Season one scored 7.70/10 on MyAnimeList, while season 2 is currently scoring a fantastic 8.55, which is even higher than other popular anime titles such as Black Clover, Baki, and Dr. Stone.
The current remake will cover the "ENTIRE story of the original manga, Monsters & Critics reported. In terms of the source material, season 2 ended somewhere around volume 16, which means we have seven volumes of the original series left to cover season 3. Unfortunately, season 3 will also be the final season for the anime series.
There is no current release date yet, but we are likely to see season 3 sometime in 2021.
Fruits Basket season 1 and season 2 both released in March (2019 and 2020, respectively). Without the pandemic, we would be expecting the third season to drop around the same month next year. However, we are still unaware of how much impact the current lockdown has brought to the production of the anime series. Hence, fans should be open to possible delays.
Warning: Contains season 2 spoilers.
Fruits Basket follows a plucky orphan named Tohru Honda, who finds herself entangled with the Sohma family.
The mysterious family hides a big secret: certain members of the family are cursed to turn into animals of the zodiac when hugged by the opposite sex. The Sohmas bow down to the mysterious family head, Akito.
Tohru discovers the family's secret in the first episode of the series, and thus begin the epic and moving adventures centered around forming meaningful relationships.
Fruits Basket season 2 ended with a couple of bombshells. After receiving the DVD of the school play from Momiji, Kureno decided to reveal his biggest secret. He is the Rooster of the zodiac, but we've never seen him in his avian form before.
He confessed twice, first on the phone to Shigure and then in person with Tohru. Kureno hugged Tohru in the park but didn't transform! It turns out his curse has broken, but he has no clue why.
While this could call for a celebration, Kureno can't help but admit that he felt mixed emotions. He is glad that he could finally be human but is also miserable that he could never fly again.
We are expecting more revelations as the anime series wraps up in season 3. Will the Sohmas figure out the cure to the curse? And if they do, would they be willing to take it? Or would they have mixed emotions just as Kureno did?
While waiting for further season 3 announcements, let's take a look back at the previous events through the Fruits Basket season 2 trailer.
Fruits Basket is available for streaming on Crunchyroll.
