Gaspard Ulliel was a French movie star set to appear in Marvel's upcoming and highly anticipated Disney Plus series, Moon Knight. Ulliel played Midnight Man opposite Oscar Isaac in the show. The actor has died after suffering a head injury following a ski accident, according to multiple reports. His family, via his agent, told French news agency AFP that he later succumbed to his injuries. He was 37 years old. French Prime Minister, Jean Castex paid tribute to the late actor on Wednesday, as per PEOPLE. "Gaspard Ulliel grew up with cinema and cinema grew with him. They loved each other madly," Castex wrote in French. "It is with a heavy heart that we will now see his most beautiful interpretations and meet this certain look. We are losing a French actor."

Cannes Film Festival director Thierry Fremaux also shared his condolences upon hearing of the young actor's tragic passing. "Gaspard belonged to this new generation of actors who were making tomorrow's French cinema. He knew how to select his roles and shaped his career which filled every promise," he shared, according to Variety. "Each appearance on the red carpet, from La Princesse de Montepensier to It's Only The End of the World illustrated his presence, both discreet and full of kindness. He was equally brilliant and talented. He gave a lot and we'll always remember him." A spokesperson for Disney told the outlet, “We are deeply saddened to learn of the tragic passing of our friend and colleague Gaspard Ulliel. Our thoughts are with his family and friends during this time.”

The actor is popular for his roles in several French films including Saint Laurent, It's Only the End of The World, and A Very Long Engagement. He also bagged two César awards, the French equivalent of an Oscar. He won the award for best actor in 2017 for his role in It's Only the End of The World and the other for most promising actor in 2004 for his performance in A Very Long Engagement. In 2007, he appeared in his first major English-speaking role in Hannibal Rising, playing Hannibal, and in 2014 played fashion designer Yves Saint Laurent in the critically acclaimed movie Saint Laurent.

The star began acting at a young age and recalled to IndieWire back in 2011, "It was around 11 or 12 that I started acting. I then became interested in cinema as an art form. I think I developed little by little a real passion for movies, not just acting. For all those years, I was more attracted to being on set, working on set than being on a stage. I'm a bit changed today. I think as an actor, the stage would be such an amazing experience. After high school I decided to go to film school." He continued, "When you're so passionate about cinema, the idea to direct your own film is really appealing. That was what I wanted to do at that time and at the same time I was getting more and more offers to act in film. So I decided to stop those studies and give it a chance as an actor."
