After its successful opening weekend, Ryan Reynold's film is definitely getting a sequel!
In the movie Free Guy, Ryan Reynolds plays a bank teller named Guy, who starts to realize that he's an NPC (Non-Player Character) in a video game called Free City. He soon becomes the hero of his own story and saves his friends from deletion by the video game's creator. Guy teams up with programmers Millie (Jodie Comer) and Keys (Joe Keery) to save his home and everybody he knows.
The movie enjoyed a successful opening weekend and it was revealed pretty soon that the film is getting a sequel. Free Guy had a $28.4 million opening weekend, raking in $51 million worldwide, according to Deadline.
Back in August, the 44-year-old tweeted: Aaaannnnd after 3 years messaging #FreeGuy as an original IP movie, Disney confirmed today they officially want a sequel. Woo hoo!! #irony. He also followed the tweet with a reference to one of the movie's jokes, delivered by Taika Waititi. "If it isn't called, 'Albuquerque Boiled Turkey' we've failed," he joked.
Based on the ending of the first film, there is plenty of room for this story to go off in new directions because the movie quite literally becomes a free, open-world game. Millie, Keys, and Mouser now overseeing their new company, which features the flagship game Free Life. The sequel could pick up years later and focus on how Guy and the other Free Life characters have evolved.
The characters played by Ryan Reynolds, Jodie Comer, Joe Keery, Utkarsh Ambudkar, and Lil Rel Howery are most likely to be back. Reynolds' second character Dude and various supporting players in Free City such as Camille Kostek as Bombshell could be back as well.

According to Ryan Reynolds, a “Free Guy” sequel is on the books after Disney were impressed by the movies' above average critical and financial reception. Free Guy topped the domestic box office with a $25M haul.#FreeGuy #RyanReynolds #Gaming pic.twitter.com/k6T94V50Zh
Reynolds told Digital Spy, "We all hope that we get to do this again. Either in this form as a sequel or something else. We're lucky, a couple of people I've got the opportunity to work with multiple times, and I'm hoping that if not in another Free Guy movie, it's in another movie or another form." Director Levy added, "My favorite thing in Free Guy is we have Taika [Waititi's] character in an original new movie literally mock the possibility and value of releasing something new. It's so rare that a studio lets you make a big-budget new movie. To have the Antwan character literally talk about the value of sequels and have this cynical attitude towards the new."
Levy added, "I will say that for anyone who's seen the movie, if we make Free Guy 2, it will be titled Albuquerque Boiled Turkey. If you've seen this movie, you'll understand that joke. It is 100 percent Free Guy 2: Albuquerque Boiled Turkey, based on one of seven million improv lines by Taika Waititi."
There are no details for the release of the sequel but Free Guy 2 might just have a late 2023 or 2024 release date, with production set to happen in 2022.
