Christian Bale was introduced as the film’s villain Gorr the God Butcher.
Thor: Love and Thunder is set to be the next release in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It is the direct sequel to Thor: Ragnarok (2017) and is part of Phase Four as the 29th film of the MCU.
In the latest official trailer of the film, a new cast member has been introduced. The trailer dropped during Game 4 of the NBA Eastern Conference Finals. In the two-minute trailer, we see Chris Hemsworth reprising as Thor and Natalie Portman as Jane along with Christian Bale who was introduced as the film’s villain Gorr the God Butcher.
Gorr is a supervillain appearing in the Marvel comic books. Growing up on an unstable planet with an inhabitable environment, Gorr grows weary of gods who never came to the rescue of his people. He gets cast out of his tribe he goes looking for revenge. In the trailer, Bale as Gorr states: "The only ones who gods care about is themselves." He adds, "So this is my vow. All gods will die." He will go head to head with Thor in the new film. " You are not like the other gods I've killed," Gorr notes to which Thor responds, "Because I have something worth fighting for."
Previously, Taika Waititi, the writer and director of the film stated: "It's a great, really fun, weird little group of heroes, a new team for Thor with Korg, Valkyrie, and The Mighty Thor. And, in my humble opinion, we have probably the best villain that Marvel's ever had in Christian Bale." And by the looks of it in the trailer, he will do justice to his words. There have been several changes in his character's appearance. Gorr co-creator Jason Aaron defended the decision.
"I've seen some concerns online about Gorr's design, based off glimpses of the character's action figure," he said. "As the guy who co-created him, along with Esad [Ribic], I'll just say that it wasn't Gorr's nose (or lack thereof) that made him the tragic and deeply disturbed God Butcher that he was. Trust in the face of Christian Bale. Need I remind you, it's a pretty goddamn talented face." The MCU seems to be taking a shot at horror with his character design as he appears in an ashy white color, with sharp teeth, and yellow eyes. Waititi also noted that Gorr in the film is "very formidable" and "very layered."
The film will follow the story of Thor as he attempts to find inner peace after the events of Avengers: Endgame. But he is forced to return to action and recruit Valkyrie played by Tessa Thompson, Korg (Waititi), and Jane Foster (Portman). Jane is Thor's ex and in this film is now the Mighty Thor. Together they will take on Gorr the God Butcher (Bale) from eliminating all gods. The film is on July 8, 2022. You can watch the trailer here:
