Before 'Fear Street Part 3: 1666' arrives, let us get back to the events in 'Fear Street Part 2: 1978' and analyze how it sets up for the third and final film.
Let's dive deep.
The second installment in the 'Fear Street' trilogy directly follows the events of the first film.
Quick recap: Deena (Kiana Madeira), her brother Josh (Benjamin Flores Jr), and Deena's girlfriend Sam (Olivia Welch) managed to survive the attacks of the witch's immortal henchmen. They thought they cheated the witch's curse by temporarily killing Sam, but they were wrong. Soon, Deena receives a call from C Berman (Gillian Jacobs), the only survivor of the Camp Nightwing massacre in 1978. Berman tells Deena that the curse is never over. Shortly after, Sam gets possessed by the witch.
'Fear Street Part 2: 1978' opens with Deena and her brother Josh tracking C Berman for answers. C Berman finally unveils what exactly happened in the Camp Nightwing massacre in 1978.
The main characters of the sequel are Cindy Berman (Emily Rudd), her boyfriend Tommy (McCabe Slye), her sister Ziggy (Sadie Sink), and their friend Alice (Ryan Simpkins).
The four of them are in Camp Nightwing in 1978 when Tommy gets attacked by Nurse Mary Lane (Jordana Spiro). Mary Lane is the mother of the singing serial killer Ruby Lane (Jordyn DiNatale), one of the witch's immortal henchmen who attacked Deena and her friends in the first film. Mary Lane tells Tommy that "one way or another, you're going to die tonight," adding she saw his name "on the wall".
Tommy survived Mary Lane's attack, but Cindy wanted to know why the nurse did it. Searching for answers, they went into the infirmary and found the nurse's diary. There, they found out that she has been investigating the curse of the witch Sarah Fier, presumably hoping to understand the curse that has turned her daughter into a mindless killer before committing suicide.
According to the legend, Sarah Fier was a witch who lived in Shadyside in 1666. She got haunted by town's people and hanged to her death. However, before she dies, she managed to "cheat her death" by cutting off her "wicked hand" on "Satan's Stone," scarring the land beneath it with the witch's mark. Once every decade, Sarah Fier possesses a Shadysider and goes into a murder spree. These killers remain undead, and the only way to stop the curse is to reunite the witch's body with her missing hand.
Mary Lane was looking for Sarah Fier's missing hand in the forest within the camp. They found an old map and some markings where Mary Lane has been digging.
Using the map, Cindy, Tommy, Alice, and Alice's boyfriend found the witch's house. Cindy and Alice explored deeper into the witch's lair and found the walls where the names of the Shadyside killers got carved. It's the same wall that Mary Lane was talking about, where Tommy's name got written. This is also the wall where Sam's name gets scratched in the first film.
Tommy suddenly gets possessed and starts murdering Alice's boyfriend. Stones and rubbles fell, blocking Cindy and Alice in the deeper part of the witch's house. Tommy heads back to the camp and starts a murdering spree, while Cindy and Alice (whose legs got severely injured after the clash with Tommy) tried to navigate the underground to find a way out.
Ziggy and Nick Goode (the future sheriff) gathered everyone from camp to keep them safe.
Cindy and Alice soon find themselves underneath the camp's bathroom. They saw Ziggy and asked for her help to get them up, but Tommy arrives, and Ziggy had to run for her life.
Alice tells Cindy to leave her behind and save Ziggy, which is a wise decision because Alice soon finds the witch's hand. Nick gets attacked and wounded by Tommy but got saved because Tommy decided to go after Ziggy instead.
Cindy found her way out just in time to save Ziggy by fatally stabbing Tommy in the camp's Mess Hall. Alice also managed to get out, bringing Sarah Fier's hand. Ziggy unintentionally bleeds into it, which means that the witch will now go after her.
They planned to reunite the witch's hand with her body, hoping to end the curse, as the legend says. The legend also said that the body is at the hanging tree in camp, so they hurriedly head to it. But before they can get out, Tommy wakes up. Tommy kills Alice before Cindy can behead him.
Cindy and Ziggy found the hanging tree. However, the body is no longer there. Instead, they found a sign that says "the witch forever lives". The sister is soon cornered by the killers, brutally attacking them.
"My sister was dead, and so was I... and most days, I wish I'd stayed dead," C Berman says in a voiceover, but Nick arrives to revive Ziggy, whose real name gets revealed to be Christine.
"Cindy, my sister, she sacrificed herself for nothing," C Berman said.
Unfortunately, nobody believes Ziggy. Nick decided to hide the truth about the legend and just told the police that Tommy just went crazy. C Berman lived an isolated life, believing that the curse will never end. However, Deena thinks otherwise, for she knows exactly where Sarah Fier's body is-- near the highway where Sam and her ex-boyfriend crashed in 'Fear Street Part 1: 1994'.
Ziggy told Deena the location of the hanging tree, which is now in Shadyside Mall. Deena and Josh found the hand and headed to the forest to bury it with the body, while C Berman/ Ziggy calls Nick.
But just as Deena was about to bury the witch's hand with her body, she gets flashbacks of the witch and sees herself in 1666, in the body of Sarah Fier, who looks just like her!
The first film has already hinted that Deena, Sam, and Sarah Fier are somehow connected, although we don't know how exactly yet.
The official trailer for 'Fear Street Part 3: 1666' is already released, and we know that the main cast members will be back. But since the third film is set decades prior, the cast will be playing different characters. Deena will seemingly play Sarah Fier while the rest of the cast plays the early settlers of the Shadyside town. Is this just a hallucination caused by the witch? Or does this signify a direct connection between them and the curse?
Another mystery is how the witch chooses her new slave. We already knew that the killers' names get written on the wall of the witch's house before she possesses them and gets them on a murdering spree. Unlike Sam and Ziggy, we didn't see Tommy or the other killers bled on Sarah Fier's hands or corpse. Does the witch choose the descendants of those who wronged her? Who moved Sarah Fier's body away from the hanging tree? And lastly, what truly happened in 1666?
We have a few days more to find out. Fear Street Part 3: 1666 will arrive on Netflix on July 16, 2021.
